OUR COLORS I like to participate in events that in some way adhere to traditions. Most Hungarians do. We sing the German drinking songs, we dance the Polish polka and the Jewish hóra. When St. Patrick’s comes, we dig into our closets to find something green. It is amazing to see some Hungarians head to toe in the color of the Irish spring, and for good luck a shamrock in their lapel. The green carnations and the beer at the bar, giving up its natural color for the day, expand the festivity. Everybody feels at ease. The reason that I chose the day of the green color is because it is a couple of days after the Hungarian Patriots’ Day celebrating March 15,1848. Then it was a struggle for freedom and independence, today it is freedom and independence. Ever since 1848, the Hungarians demonstrated with their national colors, red, white, and green. Yes, these are our colors for March 15. It is a tradition. Though we didn’t make such an impact on the world as the Irish, at least we as Hungarians should hold to our traditions and show the red, white and green. Maybe in exchange we might convince some Irish friends to join us. (J.F.B.)
