SUN, DUST, AND MIRAGE A child walking along a dirt road kicking the dust with his bare feet could keep an eye on a church steeple many miles away if he is in the flatland in the Alföld. If he would like to see a steeple that is much further away, all he has to do is to mount upon an oxen-drawn wagon and the horizon moves many miles away. It is that easy to expand the world around you. Riding on the wagon this barefooted youth could only see ahead of him, because behind, the trail of the wagon is heavily covered with thick, lingering clouds of dust stirred up by the slow moving, rattling vehicle. The zillions of dust particles charged by the hot radiation of the summer sun cling on to the motionless, laden, scorching air that vibrates in thick layers. In the yellow-blue sky thin, hardly noticeable clouds fade away not being able to hold their moisture. The endless row of vegetation, to keep their pattern, are struggling to survive on the dry crust of the cultivated land. The leaves are pale and are uniformly covered with the ever-present dust. In the distance, in the wake of the wagon, tractors, and even pedestrians, long streaks of dust clouds crisscross the scene. Around the edges of the horizon pointy little protrusions mark the place of villages. Protrusions that are church steeples. They are small from this distance, but when the barefooted child walks up to them, he might think that the steeple reaches up to the sky. At noon from these steeples the sound of the bells travel far, and they mix together in strange rhythm. From time to time they come together in a big bang only to continue on their way again. A sudden screech joins into these sounds. A bucket is lowered or pulled up at a nearby watering well making a sound of agony and the balance contraption reminds us of a giant insect attacking the earth. Around the well hoofs of cattle pound the ground in the hope to squeeze some cool water out of it. Suddenly a part of the horizon changes. Fuzzy horizontal stripes start vibrating, some with shadings in it, others just blank. They move, change places, disappear and come back. It is laboring. A phenomena is coming to life, a mirage is to happen. In the sky where moments before you couldn't see anything, a bigger than life image appears. Floating above the land there are trees, cattle standing on what seems to be a lake. Everything is pulsating with the heavy burning heat. The image comes and goes, shrinks and grows, then it takes over the horizon. The picture clears and to our amazement trees and cows are hanging upside down from the emptiness of the sky. One would ask the question: Is this the Twilight Zone? The answer is no, it is reality; it is the mirage of the Hungarian flatland. Joseph F. Balogh Stitch-groups of Mezőkövesd Matyó embroideries.
