He wrote the poem at the time Lajos Kossuth and his delegation were in Vienna presenting their demands, the 12 points. Here we show the original first print of the Nemzeti Dal with Petofi’s handwritten remarks at the end of it. The picture, a contemporary drawing, shows the Länderer and Heckenast printing plant with the enthusiastic crowd, and in the window. probably Petőfi, waving the first print of the press. In the early part of the nineteenth century photographs were made on thin metal sheets. After their inventor they were called daguerreotypes. Thanks to this invention we are lucky to have an authentic picture of our famous poet, Sándor Petőfi. Our luck wasn’t easy. It wasn’t a matter of pulling the photo out of a file. Though it was known to be Petofi’s portrait, there wasn’t much to do about it. It was badly damaged and due to its age it was so dark that only experts were able to figure out the image of the face. Thanks to an outstanding Hungarian photojournalist, Karoly Esher, who also was familiar with the technical side of photography, and with the mysterious chemistry, he restored the daguerreotypes to the point where we could get a clear image of Petőfi. Now you could see what he really looked like. ANOTHER DAY, ANOTHER BUCK For a working person, the size of the hourly wage is very important In the U.S. we passed the $4.00 line and we consider it a success. But let us not tell anybody that in Norway one gets $ 18.92 for an hour's work. Close to it are Switzerland and Germany. The cheapest labor could be found in Turkey and India where they earn $0.41. Naturally we are interested in the earnings in Hungary. Lagging behind Mexico and Brazil, the laborer in Hungary receives $ 1.22 an hour. Petőfi Sáiőor Nemzeti dal.
