Though it was known to be Petofi’s portrait, there wasn’t much to do about it. It was badly damaged and due to its age it was so dark that only experts were able to figure out the image of the face. Thanks to an outstanding Hungarian photojournalist, Karoly Esher, who also was familiar with the technical side of photography, and with the mysterious chemistry, he restored the daguerreotypes to the point where we could get a clear image of Petőfi. Now you could see what he really looked like.
