My suggested name for the column would be “The Magyarettes”. To start off, I’m writing this article about a few of the Magyar Club wives who started a sub-chapter within the club some years ago. At a bean soup dinner held at the West Side Hungarian Reformed church a group of wives, Ruth Toth, Marta Hasman and myself noticed we were all wearing jewelry with garnets and found that each of us had birthdays in January which prompted us to form our “Garnet Club”. Whenever we meet at a Magyar Club function we talk about garnets and jewelry which gives us something in common. We also found that Anne Robinson was interested in our informal conversation so she became a “member” though her birthday was not in January. Over the years, we found that a number of wives have birthdays in January. I can’t remember all of them but a few that come to mind are: Barbara Enyedy, Irene Kabay and Betty Hartman. The possibilities for interesting articles are numerous, from the women’s point of view. This article on jewelry is but a sample. Many in our organization have interesting hobbies, and activities which we seldom if ever hear about. I’m confident that if we start a little corner for the women and include articles written by them, participation in our club activities would increase. If you are interested in our little corner of the Magyar Club and love garnets or have a January birthday let one of us know and you will become a member, with no further obligation except to enjoy good conversation.
