Ladányi AUDITOR George Csatáry EDITOR Magyar Herald Dr. Stephen Szabó The most recent Past Events of our Magyar Club The March Dinner Celebration commemorating the Freedom Fight of 1848 The Magyar Club of Cleveland had its annual Bab Leves Dinner and March 15 celebration. It was a very pleasant evening including a delicious home-style meal, musical entertainment with Joe Jeromos and his talented group of musicians (Hungarian music), and activities commemorating the March 15 anniversary. The dinner-dance was the highlight of our club calendar. It was held at the West Side Hungarian Reformed Church on Saturday, March 16, 1991. The evening began at 7:00 p.m., with festivities lasting until midnight. Our most energetic President, Dr. István Tóth, gave a very appropriate commemorative address about both the 1848 and 1956 Freedom Fights of freedom-loving magyars, with special utterances to Kossuth and Petőfi. A „Talpra Magyar” was recited with refrains in chorus by all attending. “Kossuth Lajos az Üzente” was song by all impressively and in good Hungarian. The celebration will be long remembered by those who were present! NEW MEMBERS: Our Board of Directors approved the applications of the following new members to our Club: Louis Horváth, Peter Solymosi, Edith K. Lauer, Ms. Kovi Smith. By the provision of our By-Laws, after the publication of their names, they are full-pledged members in our Cleveland Magyar Club. Hearty welcome and God’s speed! Regarding membership applications, details of all our events and reservations, you may call Veronika E. Ilyes, secretary: 461-4126. Magyar Culture To forget our native culture we, who came from another land, Would leave the soul void, unfulfilled, Like the windblown shifting sand. We are products of those before us, defenders of the old homeland, From whom sprung our own pioneer spirit to forge ahead in a new strange land. In remembrance of their historic past, with pride and love, we reveredly ask God's blessing, on the Magyar Culture, May it continue gloriously in the future as in the past. Margit Nyerges Kovell Lakewood, Ohio The Hungarian Frontier (Continuedfrom Page 1) to Hungary. Their dreams of fortune shattered, the majority found themselves stranded in America, with a way to a better life here, but no way to go back home. Because life must go on, and because they wanted to live life to the fullest, they built their small homes, churches, and schools. To help each other in their new land, they formed organizations and built meeting centers, established credit unions, insurance groups, and founded aid (fraternal) societies. Yet they remained faithful to the heritage and culture of the nation they left behind. The Hungarians who first arrived in Cleveland 100 years ago made a very real contribution to the city. Their legacy lives on today in their 3 Roman Catholic, 1 Greek Catholic, 2 Reformed, 2 Lutheran, 1 Adventist, 1 Baptist Churches, and 1 Hungarian Jewish Synagogue; a number of large credit unions, insurance companies, scores of social and cultural organizations, and a large number of industrial and professional companies, as well as in the statues and other historical memorabilia around the Greater Cleveland area.
