Our Club in its 65 years of history now has its 38th president, who took office on May 12 of the current year. DR. ISTVÁN J. TÓTH Dr. Toth was born in Budapest in 1938. He escaped to the west after the Hungarian Revolution in late 1956. He received his B.Sc. in 1962, M.Sc. in 1963 and his Ph.D. in 1965 all in materials science and metallurgical engineering from the University of London, England. He also successful­ly completed the Program for R&D Managers at Harvard Graduate School of Business and the Executive Program at Carnegie-Mellon University Gra­duate School of Industrial Adminis­tration. Dr. Toth is the author of more than 50 technical and business publications, lectures and presentations, he has edi­ted books on technology. He has orga­nized and chaired national and inter­national technical conferences and has several patents. He served on com­mittees of National Materials Advisory Board, AIME, ASM, ASTM, SAE, SAMPE and DoD Manufacturing Technology Planning. Dr. Toth received special awards from NASA, DoD, TRW and profes­sional societies in recognition of tech­nical contributions. Before joining TRW in 1967 he was employed as a senior scientific officer of the Engineering Laboratory of the Gas and Energy Council, London, England, and as a senior research en­gineer of the R&D Center of Solar Aircraft, San Diego, California. Dr. Toth began his career with TRW, being a multi-national and mul­ti-billion dollar company, in the Ma­terials and Manufacturing Technology Center where he worked in various capacities on aerospace, automotive and industrial products, until 1981, when he was appointed Director, Technology of the Industrial Products Group. In this capacity he was the chief technical officer of the group and had full responsibility for the tech­nology coordination for the Industrial and Energy Sector which consisted of 21 divisions. In 1986 Dr. Toth was appointed to the position of Director, Technology of TRW’s executive offices, and in 1988 he was given the added respon­sibilities of Advanced Developments for the company. In this capacity, he Dr. Toth resides in Richmond Heights with his wife Emilia and daughter Erika. His sons Robert and Attila both having majored in business are living away from home and in the travel and insurance industries respec­tively. His hobbies include chess and tennis. P.S. Our new president in his 33 years away from native land still spells his name: István, with loyalty to Magyar traditions. DR. JOSEPH PIRI Endrédi and kiskdlnai Dr. Joseph Piri was born on the 16th day of August, 1914, at Pilismarót near Esz­tergom in Hungary. His father, Jo­seph, was a professional officer with the rank of Captain in the Hungarian Calvary and died in action inside Rus­sia on the tenth day of August, 1917. His mother ’s maiden name was Lidia Marossy. His family is one of ancient nobility on both sides. On his father’s side it dates back to the year 1072 and on his mother ’s side to the year 1215. He was raised by his grandfather who was a landowner possessing lands consisting of 585 holds for cultivation and 41 holds of vineyard. He received his elementary educa­tion at Pilismarót, his secondary edu­cation at the Reformed Gimnázium in Budapest. He received a scholarship to Wittenberg College in Germany to study Church History under Professor Heusse, Church Historian. He com­pleted his theological education at the Royal Stephen Tisza University in Debrecen, specializing in Church His­tory. He continued his post-graduate studies at the Law School of the same University, in European International Law. He was Associate Professor of Church History at the University to Dr. Imre Révész, and later succeeded him on the faculty. Dr. Piri has two doctoral degrees, one in Church Histo­ry and one in International Law. He lived in Buda through World War II. After the war he lost every­thing he possessed. The saddest loss of all was that in the aftermath of the war his family life was destroyed. In 1948 the rigid closing of the nation’s borders made it impossible for them to escape together as a family. He has three daughters, one son and eight grandchildren and three great grand­children. They are his pride and joy. He left Hungary in 1948, migrating to Germany where Dr. Sándor Nagy assigned him to administer spiritual care to the Hungarian refugees at the camp in Dachau. In 1951 he migrated to the U.S. and settled in Cleveland where he had to start a new life. He has been an active member of the First Hungarian Reformed Church in Cleveland since 1951 where he served as Chief Elder from 1956—1984. He has been an active lay member of the Calvin Synod for 30 years. For four terms (8 years) he was Lay Leader of the Governing Body of the Bishop ’s Council. He was Secretary of the Lakeside Classis of the Calvin Synod for 12 years and servedfor 15 years as Vice-President of the Cleveland United Hungarian Societies. He has been loyal member of the Magyar Club for decades. He has delivered more than 300 lec­tures on various topics, has written numerous articles in different publica­tions.
