Report on the May Gala-Event of Magyar Club with the installation of the new officers and honoring Mrs. Steven Körmendy as Hungarian Mother of the Year. The festive and ceremonial occasion was held on May 14, 1988 at the Banquet Hall of Gilmour Academy in glittering style and with a sumtuous Dinner, that will be long remembered. At the threshold of the second Century of Hungarian Life in America, here at the cradle of Magyar Life in Magyar Debrecen, the 39th president of Magyar Club was installed in the person of Theodore Tóth with his elected officers. The installation service was conducted by the Right Rev. Dr. Stephen Szabo. The impressive moment was when the new officers loudly repeated the words of the formal oath of their office: “I, (pronouncing names) — do pledge and vow to uphold the Charter, Constitution and By-laws of the Magyar Club of Cleveland, Ohio. In accordance with the aim and rules, 1 will do my best to promote all activities, to preserve Hungarian traditions, in order to perpetuate Magyar Culture in our City and wherever 1 can. During the Term of my office, 1 will endeavor to advance our Club for the benefit of all, with increased loyalty and active participation. So help me God!" After the Installation Frank Dobos presented the Annual Award of Magyar Club to the selected Hungarian mother of the Year: Mrs. Steven Körmendy with a splendid address to the celebrant. Mrs. S. Kormendy was bom in Cleveland to the Boldizsár Family (Helen, Jolán). She has 3 brothers, Dr. Julius and Dr. Albert, opthamologists, and Frank, attorney, who was a former president of the Magyar Club. She has one daughter, Carol Abe, and two grandchildren, Steven and Lisa Rae Abe. She attended Western Reserve University to become a teacher of music, piano, and voice, along with Kindergarten certification. She taught Kindergarten at Harvey Rice School in the heart of the Buckeye Road Community. She graduated with the first graduating class of Shaker Hts. High School in a class of 25. The Kormendy’s are active members of the Westside Hungarian reformed church. Steve Kormendy, her late husband, former president of the Magyar Club, sent generous contributions each Christmas to both the Protestant and Catholic Hungarian Churches in Cleveland. Mrs. Kormendy, as Hungarian mother of the year, is being honored most of all for being a loving mother, a wonderful cook, and a person who loves cultural events such as opera, theater, and the symphony. She has established an endowment in memory of her late husband at Ohio Northern University for a lecture series in the law school. In the first two years of this endowment two of the speakers were Senator Orin Hatch from Utah and Ramsey Clark.
