MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 15. oldal Presentation of farewell gift to Rev. and Mrs. Leslie Martin. L to r: (standing) Eleonor Szász, Jennie Torzsas, Linda Hauck, Theresa Naeder, Helen Cutler, Irene Belanszky, Jeanne László During the rededication service, the church was filled with friends from the Hungarian Reformed community, from local churches and businesses, and supporters from near and far. It was a day of thanksgiving: a day to praise our heavenly Father for his blessings. A reception followed in the newly renovated hall. It was glorious to see the room filled with our dear Christian friends who without hesitation had answered our call for help. The bonds of friendship created during this difficult time will never be broken. We are forever grateful to those who offered their support, despite their own hardships. God bless them all. On Palm Sunday, April 8, 2001, Rev. Csilla L. Spelda began providing worship services at 2:00 PM here in the Staten Island church. We are so thankful for the spiritual guidance she brings to us! We have re-introduced the Hungarian language to our worship service, which has attracted Hungarian friends from elsewhere on Staten Island. We recognize that we are truly fortunate to have had the pulpit vacancy filled so quickly, and we thank God for filling this need. We pray, Lord, for those whose needs are greater than ours and for those who may feel the burden of seemingly unanswered prayers. Our Calendar of Events for 2001 has been planned and it is “business as usual.” We have resumed a full schedule of fund-raising events and activities, including September 29 - Annual Bazaar/ Chinese Auction; November 9 - Christmas Chinese Auction; December 1 - kolbasz-making; and December 16 - Annual Christmas Party. We are so happy to report that the fellowship here in Staten Island continues to be strong. Our discipleship and commitment to mission activities continues to grow. We have completed yet another chapter in the life of this congregation...and it has a happy ending! Praise the Lord! Not counting the picnics, attendance dropped sometimes dramatically as many stopped coming to the services. Their absence left a physical and spiritual vacuum in a season where only the bills kept coming regularly. This year turned out to be very differently. Our Church Council looked to the Word of God both for inspiration and guidance to increase our service to the community of the faithful around us. Our new Contemporary Worship Services started to draw more and more people even on the hottest summer nights. Helping out the busy minister very often, Mark, a student from the nearby Princeton Seminary gave some interesting and faithful messages to us on every second Wednesdays. Average attendance grew to well over 30 people on these nights! Thanks are also due and extended here to our Chief-Elder, John and to Elder Patty for their organizing effort as well as to those who brought refreshments to the friendly receptions following the Services. With the aid of Ivy Tobin and Susan Csapó and others, John and Patty also launched a new project: a new Vacation Bible School! This program also turned out to be well attended, both by current church members and our neighbors came to see and hear our Christian training program, specially designed for the youth. Thus, our children who recently went in record numbers to the Hungarian Church Camp, held in Pennsylvania, were also fed spiritually right in Trenton! This active and we believe fruitful summer with its growing attendance at all services, will give us a hope for a successful future. May His peace will guide us in the coming months that we may serve His Kingdom in true and joyful faithfulness! Rev. László Ujj, Pastor
