The meeting continued with a memorial service, conducted by the Dean, during which time special tribute was paid to the Rt. Rev. Dr. Dezső Abraham, Bishop Emeritus, who suddenly past away during the month of July, last year. Also remembered, the Rev. Mihály Orosz, who was on the roll of ministers, died in a motor vehicle accident in Hungary. The following elders were also remembered: Mr. Aladar Orosz, Mr. Andrew Lovász from Perth Amboy, Mr. István Mihály from Linden. With the announcements of upcoming events in our congregations, Mr. Gabe Csapó, Chief Elder of the Trenton, NJ congregation , extended an invitation to the Assembly to meet in Trenton in 1999. Following a Benediction, offered by the newly installed Dean, Rev. Dr. Imre Bertalan, Mr. Robert Csizma, Chief Elder of the host congregation extended an invitation for all of us to attend the fellowship dinner. After a long afternoon of deliberations it was wonderful to sit down to the beautifully decorated tables and share the delicious food, prepared by the members of the Bethlehem congregation. Truly, it was a dinner that we shall long remember. We would all like to express our thanks and appreciation for the Bethlehem congregation for hosting our meeting this year and we all look forward to meet again next year in Trenton. Katona, Modesto, CA, Eva M Szabó, Paramus, NJ HANDS MEET OVER THE OCEAN (Hungarian Poets of Transylvania in English) The newly released book MARADOK -1 REMAIN has been described by the press in the old country as peerless in both Europe and America. Its aim is to introduce the American public to the prominent poets of Transylvania. The book was published by Pro Print of Csíkszereda, and in its over 400 pages contains the works of ten contemporary Transylvanian poets, Árpád Farkas, István Ferenczes, Gizella Hervay, Sándor Kanyadi, László Király, Aladar Laszloffy, Lajos Magyari, Béla Marko, Domokos Szilagyi and Géza Szocs - translated into English along with the original text written during the Causescu dictatorship. A letter from Adnras Suto serves as introduction to this carefully selected and representative collection. The anthologist Gyöngyvér Harko, who was born and lived 33 years in Transylvania, explains that the cultural baggage she brought with her sixteen years ago can endear the poems of the master craftsmen of the old country to the people of the New World and, beyond that, serve as a rallying cry for Hungarians in diaspora everywhere around the world; their precious cultural heritage can be the lifeboat that will save them from disappearing in the sea of humanity. The able translator of these poems is Paul Sohar who was born in Szekesfehervar and since 1956 has made his home in the US; during the Stalinist era he witnessed the brutality of oppression, and thus he could easily put himself into the experiences and emotions described by the Hungarian poets living in Romania in the nineteen seventies and eighties. His ambitious undertaking brings us translations that, while faithful to the original, can stand on their own as poetry in English. Reading them it is easy to forget they were inspired by and created in another tongue. “This book is invaluable to Hungarians living abroad and those of Hungarian descent in English speaking countries who want to discover and cultivate their roots but have weakened their grip on the language after a generation or two. In either the chosen native tongue or the native English of their children and grandchildren, they can be touched by the spirit of Transylvania and Hungary brought to life by this volume: - thus mused Lajos Sylvester in the literature column of the Transylvanian newspaper “Háromszék” in March, 1998, and it is easy to agree with him. The book “Maradok -1 Remain” is available from Hungarian bookstores in the US and Canada, either directly or by mail order.
