MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 11. oldal 38TH ANNUAL CONFERENCE OF CHURCH WOMEN UNITED The 38th Annual Conference of Church Women United was held on Sunday, May 4, 1997 at the Magyar Reformed Church of Staten Island. Mrs. Linda Hauck, serving as President of the Conference, welcomed everyone. Rev. Edwin Stern, Roebling, NJ, led the Opening Devotional Service. We worshipped the Lord with our singing of the hymn “Our God, our Help.” The Scripture reading (Luke 18:15-27) focuses on Jesus’ special love and compassion for those who recognize their dependence on God, and it relates Jesus’ feelings toward those who place their material wealth before the service of God. i1 . : 3' ■pww ? i rM % Rev. Emily Varga-Comella, the main speaker of the meeting Following the Opening Devotional Service, the guest speakers were introduced. Rev. Thomas Cornelia, Sr., pastor of the Brookdale Reformed Church in Bloomington, NJ, and his wife, Emily Varga-Comella, Chaplain of the Reformed Church Home in Irvington, NJ, discussed the topic: “Challenges in the 21st Century for the Christian Church: its aging membership and the role of women.” Although they provided encouraging statistics on the growth of Christianity throughout the world, they highlighted many of the problems our churches here in the U.S.A. are facing. One of the greatest difficulties is effective ministering to different age groups. Emily Varga-Comella discussed the role of women in the church, and the problems they are facing today especially at the ministerial level. Their presentation was very informative and enlightening. We all agreed there is a lot of work ahead for our ministers, our consistories and especially for the women of our churches who have assumed primary leadership roles within the church, not necessarily by choice.
