Volume V, Issue 6 Bridgeport, February, 1995 A FIRST STEP INTO THE NEXT CENTURY Chief Elder, Lou Babycos holds up photos that go into the corner stone box. It seems that we live in a world which is moving very quickly. In some areas, like medicine where new advancements are always welcome, speed is preferable. Amidst the flight of progress it is easy to overlook important milestones. This is one of the reasons why the recent celebration of our congregations’s 100th Anniversary was significant. Ourmembers and guests paused to reflect upon the importance of our existence in Bridgeport for so many years. It was also an occasion to thank God for all that we have contributed to our Hungarian community. Reaching such a milestone is truly a significant accomplishment and worthy of celebrating. Within the many facets of the centennial observance, let me focus on just a few highlights. We began the day, November 27,1994, in church worshipping God. This was only right, since it has been God’s continued support which has sustained this congregation through the years. The special combined English and Hungarian service reflected our history as well as recognizing our ties to this country. We were honored to have numerous participants. Rev. Dr. Sam Fogai represented the Connecticut Conference of the United Church of Christ. Rev. Albert Elswick came from Virginia to be with his home congregation. Lou Babycos, our Chief Elder, represented theconsistory. Father Rocco Florenza of the Church of the Resurrection, Rev. Dr. Don Studer and Mr. Reverend Dr. Anthony Szilagyi with the Consul General of the Republic of Hungary, Mr. Balazs László Gyula Egervári read from the scriptures and offered prayers in English and Hungarian. Rev. Harold Smith was once again with us to remind us of the debt we owe to the German Reformed Church, our original sponsors in 1894. Miss Ethel Egry and our fine choir provided the inspirational music. (continued on page 3) Mr. gerald Szor, newly elected Chief Elder, speaks to the guests. Mrs. Edyth Zudla presents a gift on behalf of the Noodle Group.
