MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 13. oldal NEW LEADERSHIP AT THE HELM OF THE HUNGARIAN REFORMED CHURCH IN AMERICA The Hungarian Reformed Church in America held its synod meeting on November 19th at the 82nd Street Hungarian Reformed Church in New York City. The meeting opened with a devotional offered by the Rt. Rev. Dr. Andrew Harsanyi Bishop at 10:15 am. with the singing of the Hungarian hymn: Szállj ala, oh áldott Szent Lelek. The roll call was taken by the Rev. Pal Mezo Ecclesiastical Secretary and Mr. Zoltán Ambrus lay secretary of the Synod. The following members and official delegates were present. Bishop Dr. Andrew Harsanyi, Chief Elder, Mr. Stephen Szabó. Bishop Emeritus, Dezső Abraham, Deans. Rev. Alexander Forro Bishop elect from the New York Classis. Rev. Andor Demeter from the Western Classis, Rev. Stefan M. Torok from the Eastern Classis, Chief Elders: Mr. László B. Vanyi, New York Classis, and Mr. Balint Balogh from the Eastern Classis. Delegates from the Classis: Mrs. Roza Skolik from the New York Classis, Mr. Robert Bone from the Western Classis and Mrs. Elizabeth Novak from the Eastern Classis. Members of the Judicial Commission: Rev. August Molnár and Dr. Andrew Schilling from the New York Classis, Rev. Pal Mezo and Mr. István Farkas from the Western Classis, Rev. Dezső Abraham and Mr. Balint Balogh from the Eastern Classis. Synod treasurer Miss Priscilla Hunyady, and Mr. Julius Furrier Szucs attorney of the Synod. Those excused were: Mr. Anthony Beke former Chief Elder of the Synod, and Mr. Zoltán Kun Chief Elder Western Classis. Bishop Harsanyi established a quorum and the meeting was declared fully constituted. The minutes of the 1990 Synod meeting were distributed as they appeared in the official publication of the Synod and was accepted. Bishop Harsanyi formed the following Committees: Financial Committee: members were Rev. Stefan M. Torok, Mr. Balint Balogh and Mr. László B. Vanyi. Nominating Committee: Rev. Dezső Abraham, Rev. Andor Demeter and Mr. Robert Bone. The Synod Meeting continued with the report of the Bishop. Our readers will be able to read it in this issue of the publication ,with the full report in Hungarian and portions of it in English. The Synod Meeting also heard report of the Chief Elder Mr. Stephen Szabó. Both reports were accepted thanks were expressed to Bishop Harsanyi and Mr. Stephen Szabó for their comprehensive report. The Synod Meeting heard the report of treasurer Miss Priscilla Hunyady., who gave separate reports on the financial status of the General Fund, Mission Fund of the Synod and also on the financial status of the official Publication of our Church Newspaper. Miss Hunyady is the treasurer of the Magyar Church newspaper as well. The Synod also received a report on the condition of the Church Publication of Magyar Church offered by the Rev. Stefan M. Torok Editor. He indicated that the financial contributions from our churches are irregular. There are many who do not bear any responsibility at all, while others have requested a cut on the number of issues. Rev. Torok ,Editor of the newspaper recommended that the newspaper should be printed quarterly, and that each congregation should be billed for the issues received. This motion was carried. The Synod Meeting continued with the report on the respective Deans and Chief Elders on the life of the Classis. Rev. Torok and Mr. Balint Balogh reported on the life of the Eastern Classis. Rev. Forro and Mr. László B. Vanyi on the life of the New York Classis. Rev. Andor Demeter on the life of the Western Classis. Mr. Robert Bone gave a separate report on the recent events at the Allen Park Michigan Congregation on the election of a new Senior Pastor the Rev Burbridge. Following a short break in the meeting for lunch, the deliberations continued with the report on the Finance committee. Rev. Torok Chairperson reported that the financial books were found in order . Motion was moved and accepted. Bishop Dr. Andrew Harsanyi at this point asked the secretary pro tern. Rev. Torok to give a report on the results of the congregational elections. Rev. Torok reported that ballots were sent to all congregations. From the received ballots all congregations unanimously cast their ballots for the Rev. Alexander Forro as Bishop. Mr. Stephen Szabó was elected as Chief Elder and the following members for the Judicial Commission were elected: Eastern Classis Rev. Dezső Abraham and Mr. Balint Balogh, New York Classis, Rev. August Molnár and Dr. Otto Kanocz, Western Classis: Rev. Pal Mezo and Mr. István Farkas. Rev. Dezső Abraham chairperson of the Nominating Committee reported the following: First: The committee recommends that retiring Bishop Dr. Andrew Harsanyi be named Titular Bishop, Synod Consultant for Ecumenical Concerns as Honorary Bishop.
