PRAYER offered by Bishop Dr. Andrew Harsanyi at the opening of the meeting of the Boars of Directors of the Bethlen Home in Ligonier on September 9, 1992 Lord God Almighty, once again we feel you hide yourself and instead of clearly knowing your way s we go in confusion together; our minds are not with one accord, each one of us has come here having a different opinion which we believe should direct the actions of our Home’s future. Inspire us to draw near together, let us take councel together as we bring forth our case before you. In you we know we have righteousness and strength. Let us listen to your counsel and thus find that you are not a hidden God but one who opens up the secret of your will. By your grace let us with one accord further the life of our precious Bethlen Home in a new age yet holding fast to the faith of our fathers and mothers. We thank you for the gift of this faith which never fails as we have it through the love of Jesus Christ in his name we pray. Amen. LOUIS ILLÉS 1926-1992 It was during the August 13th board meeting of the Hungarian Reformed World Federation in Budapest that we received the shocking news of the sudden passing away of the Reverend Louis Illés, pastor of our Church of Duquesne, PA. In the course of our telephone conversation just prior my departure he assured me that he had fully recovered, “lam allowed to go downstairs all flights,” he said. We could hardly believe the news that August 9 he had been buried in the church cemetery in Duquesne. Lajos Illés was 66 years old. His grandfather was pastor of the Reformed Church of Hódmezővásárhely, one of the great congregations in Transtibiscan District; his father was a language teacher. Lajos Hies was graduated from the famous gimnázium in the Lónyai utca in Budapest. (The school was taken over by the communist state and now after several decades of “captivity” its return to the Reformed Church is hopefully expected.) Young Hies left Hungary after the war and began his theological studies at the University of Bonn, Germany. From there fellow sudents aided his emigration to the United States; he finished his studies at the Pacific School of Religion in Berkeley, CA acquiring his ministerial qualification. After several years of pastoral service at the Hungarian Reformed Church of San Francisco, CA he ministered 26 years our Reformed Church of Duquesne, PA. Lajos Hies was an outstanding pastor but also an erudite theologian. For many years he was ecumenical secretary of the Hungarian Reformed Church of America. He represented our denomination at many interreligious conferences (like the NCCC) where his active participation was heard and appreciated. He worked in the community of the Bethlen Home and assisted in the preparation of the Bethlen Almanach. He was an expert photographer, the countless tapes he produced were aired at the Hungarian radio services in the area. The community of our Hungarian Reformed Church in America shares the grief of his wife, his daghter and their families and cherishes his memory in gratitude to God for the life of Louis Hies. Andrew Harsanyi POLITICIANS URGED TO REFRAIN FROM PARTISAN USE OF GOD’S NAME Twenty-three U.S. church leaders have appealed in a letter to President Bush, the Republican Party and those working for the reelection of the president to adopt campaign strategies that make it very clear that God belongs to no one side.
