MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 13. oldal MYSTERIOUS DEATH OF TRANSYLVANIAN PARISHIONER (ROMANIA) A member of a Reformed Church congregation in Timisoara (Temesvár) was found dead in the woods outside the town on September 14 although the news did not reach friends until 16th, according to reports from Transylvania via Hungary. Ernő Űjvárossy, a building engineer and close associate of the pastor of the church, László Tőkés, had been active in defending the pastor. He had disappeared in mysterious circumsatnces on the morning of September 12. In a letter to his bishop, László Papp of Oradea (Nagyvárad), three days after the disappearance, Tőkés expressed his concern. Újvárossy had written a petition to the bishop and had taken part in a delegation from the congregation on May 26. These had been organized after Bishop Papp ordered the transfer of Tőkés from Timisoara to a remote village on April 1 because of his outspoken views. Tőkés, with the support of his congregation, had refused to comply with the order and had remained in his Timisoara church. Bishop Papp refused to see the delegation on May 26, and threats of force were issued if the group did not go away. Tőkés writes that such threats are part of a worsening atmosphere of fear. Some members of the congregation had been threatened. Űjvárossy had become increasingly dispirited and afraid, Tőkés writes, as attempts were made, directly or indirectly, to drive a wedge between members of the congregation and their pastor. Tőkés accused the bishop of responsibility for the situation, and called on him to intervene in this case. By the time Pastor Tőkés wrote his letter to the bishop, Űjvárossy’s body had already been found in the Vadasz woods outside Timisoara, according to the Hungarian daily Magyar Nemzet. The circumstances of his death are not yet known. [Preston News Service] INTERNATIONAL THEOLOGICAL CONFERENCE IN BUDAPEST The Commission on Faith and Order of the World Council of Churches (Geneva) met in Budapest on August 9-21. The Commission has 120 members from all over the world who represent all of the great Christian denominations; by 12 members the Roman Catholic Church is represented, too. The Commission held its last meeting in 1985, in Stavanger (Norway) and it is “the most representative theological Forum on the earth.” In Budapest the Commission adopted the final form of three projects of studies: that of the “Baptism, Eucharist and Ministry,” “Confessing One Faith” and “The Unity of the Church and the Renewal of Human Society.” By way of these studies the Commission will help the churches to oversee their divisions in order that they render their common witness and contribute to the solution of the actual problems of humanity. The leadership of the Commission was received by State Minister Pozsgay. “This discussion had a great impact on us. This encounter and the contacts of the members of our Commission with representatives of the Church and public life in Hungary we are witnessing to a political and spiritual renewal which gave our meeting a special accent” — said Dr. Giinter Gassmann, the Director of the Commission.
