MAGYAR GGYfíAZ 15. oldal I HAD A PART Throughout His sojourn here below, Integrally, I had a part In all His sufferings and His woe — I helped to break the Saviour’s heart. My thoughtless spirit closed a door In rustic Bethlehem one night; What shame, the Saviour to ignore, The Heav’nly Stranger thus to slight! My heavy eyes, no doubt He saw, As His disciples fell asleep; Alas, unmindful of the awe, My vigil, lo, I failed to keep. The dawning light my shadow cast - In Pilate’s crowded judgment hall; “For or against,” a question vast, With strident voice, was asked of all. My voice gave volume to the cry Which rang, “Away with Him, away!” I cried with others, “Crucify!” The multitude I helped to sway. The nails which pierced the Saviour’s hands, Were sharpened by my sins, I know; Yea, I assisted Romans bands, My sins gave force to every blow. He wore a crown whose every thorn Was pointed by my sin and shame; The thirst endured, the bitter scorn, This guilt I dare not to disclaim. The gloom surrounding Christ that day Was deepened by my blinded sight; The levity, its rank display, With it my guilty soul indict. I thrust the spear which rent His side, I caused His holy Blood to flow; I heard the Saviour as He cried, “Forgive!” unmindful of His woe. The load of sin which broke the heart Of Christ upon the cruel Tree, Alas, ’twas mine, a major part, He took my place to set me free.
