MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 11 CARTERET, N. J. We gratefully note that large congregations attended the Christmas program of the Sunday School and the holiday worship services; attendance was rather low, however, on the second day of Christmas and on New Year’s Eve. Donations during the holidays were exceptionally high without special gifts of the organizations which, this year, were presented at the Annual Dinner in late October. The Sunday School children enjoyed an excellent, Bible-oriented magician’s show; the Youth Fellowship went around caroling. Following the New Year’s service the congregation visited the parsonage for an informal “Happy New Year” greeting. The annual congregational meeting on February 17 received the following reports: receipts in 1979: $50,866, together with carry over from 1978: $95,852; expenses in 1979: $55,366. In 1979 we paid the major portion of the cost of our 75th Anniversary renovation and improvement projects ($19,000 out of $32,500); $4,000 for insurance and $8,100 for fuel and electricity were a heavy burden on our budget. On the other hand, out of the $55,300 receipts $12,000 were from “other” sources, $5,500 from organizations’ gifts and $37,800 from “direct” contributions of members. Vital statistics for 1979: 4 baptisms, 3 confirmed, 4 weddings, 10 funerals; we have 262 voting members, 56 children, 428 constituency, 359 contributing members (including Sunday School children). Baptism: Gábriellé Harsanyi, daughter of Raymond Garcia and his wife, Fruzsina Margit Harsanyi on December 25. The child is the granddaughter of the Pastor and Mrs. Harsanyi and received their family name as her middle name. DUQUESNE, PA. Baptisms: Eric Andrew Cubakovic, the son of Bruce Cubakovic, and his wife, the former Denise Gougler was christened on January 13th. Godparents are Paul Cubakovic and Marsha Gougler. Jason Daniel Carman, the son of David Carman and his wife, the former Cathy Danko was christened on February 10th. Godparents are William Danko Jr. and Theresa Muhic. Members of the Sunday School were present at the Carman baptism, and immediately following the liturgy of tlie Sacrament of Holy Baptism, we dedicated the Communion Silverware Storage bags, donated by the Sunday School at Christmas time. The Sunday School recessed its sessions during the month of January, in anticipation of winter weather. Sessions resumed in February. Funerals: John Kish on November 17th. John Nagy, November 29th, interment in our cemetery. Charles Nagy Jr., former officer and councilman of our congregation, a director of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America, on December 20th, interment in our cemetery. We ask the Lord’s consoling love and compassion to heal the wounds of the sorrowing families. Communion: During the Christmas Season 160 members of our congregation received the Holy Elements. On the First Sunday in the Lenten Season 110 of our members received communion. Caused by the overlap of publication deadlines, two items were inadvertedly left out of the December issue: Church council hired Cathy Kennedy to be our organist as of November 4th, 1979, to replace Karen Sabo, who moved to Texas with her husband. Also, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Beres, our honorary councilman celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in November. We ask God’s abundant blessing upon the celebrating couple. Easter Season schedule: Lenten Vespers every Wednesday at 7:30 in the evening. During Holy Week: Wednesday 7:30 in the evening Lenten Vaspers. As a preparation for Christmas members of the Council and of the church organized Christmas carolling on December 23rd. We administered the Holy Communion twice: at the English service on Thursday evening at 7:30, before Christmas (Dec. 20) and on Christmas Day at both the English and Hungarian services. On Christmas Eve we had a nice Candlelight Service. The Sunday School performed a nice Christmas program, the children’s choir sang Christmas carols, and the children recited poems. At the end of the service the children received treats from the Women’s Guild. On the second day of Christmas we had a Hungarian service. December 31st we had a combined service, and we started the New Year with a Hungarian service. On January 6th, in the absence of the Pastor because of his illness, the Rev. Paul Kovács, director of the Bethlen Home preached in English; the Hungarian service was performed by the Rev. Béla Oláh, visiting retired minister from Hungary. On January 13th both the English and Hungarian services were performed by elder John Kontz. On January 11th the Women’s Guild served dinner for those in need at the Salvation Army. On January 15th the Women’s Guild elected its officers for 1980. They are: president Mrs. Norma Jordanhazy, vice-president Mrs. Margaret Kottán Oeler, secretary Mrs. Grace Kontz, treasurer Mrs. Elizabeth Orosz, sunshine-lady Mrs. Mary Fedor. On January 20th, the officers of the Council, Women’s Guild, Christian Fellowship and Social Activities Group were installed during the English service. Mr. John Simon had a nice slide program of his visit to Hungary, on January 31st. On February 10th we had our Annual Congregational Meeting, after a combined service. Mr. William Orris, Sr. was elected honorary chief elder of the congregation after the death of the former honorary chief elder, the late John Darnay.
