10 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ MAGYAR At CHURCH RT. REV. STEPHEN KOVÁCS Rt. Rev. Stephen Kovács was born on June 23, 1916 in Keqskemét, Hungary. His ancestors on his father’s side were cabinetmakers, and on his mother’s side, tanners. At the age of 18, he graduated from the Gym­nasium of the Reformed Church in Kecskemét. After graduation, he became a seminary student in the Theological Academy of Sárospatak. He completed his theological training in 1938, and was sent by his Seminary to the Pittoburgh-Xenia Presbyterian Semi­nary in Pittsburgh, Pa. to continue his studies as a Post-Graduate Student. In 1939, the Very Rev. Joseph Urban, Dean of the Western Classis of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America gave him the charge as Pastor of the small, struggling Hungarian Reformed Church in Akron, Ohio. In Ohio, he attended the Oberlin Theological School and the University of Akron. He married Irene Pavuk, a member of the Hungarian Reformed Church of McKeesport, Pa. in 1942. While in Akron, Rev. Kovács became the Dean of the Western Classis. In 1965, after a new church was built and dedicated in Akron under his pastorate, Rev. and Mrs. Stephen Kovács and family. Rev. Kovács accepted the call of the Trenton Church. In addition to his duties as minister of the Tren­ton Church, he also fulfilled the office of the General Secretary of the Hungarian Reformed Church in America for eight years. Rt. Rev. and Mrs. Kovács have three children: Stephen, Judith, Daniel, and five grandchildren. Rt. Rev.
