10 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ NEWS FROM THE CONGREGATIONS AKRON, OHIO We had a very successful Presbyters Conference in our church during the month of September. The key speaker of the Conference was Elmer Varga, the Central Secretary of the Hungarian Reformed Federation. The title of his presentation was: “The layman and his church.” We had groups from Buffalo, N.Y., Duquesne, Pa., McKeesport, Pa., Fairport Harbor, Elyria, Cleveland East, Cleveland West and Cleveland Presbyterian Church. Our church was very well represented during the Con­ference. During the month of October we started the new Confirmation Class and we reorganized our Youth Group under the leadership of Yolanda Her­­shey. May God bless these activities! The newly elected officers of the Christian Youth Fellowship were in­stalled on October 2nd: president Laura Wickers, vice president Lori Hódi, sec­retary Sandy Chwerut, treasurer Dean Varga, chaplain Shawn Kazay, historian Brian Gottschalk, advisers for the year: Mrs. Rose Wickers, Mrs. Irene Parker and Mrs. David Gottshalk. Hungarian Class for those who would like to learn the language will be con­ducted on every Monday at 7 p.m. by Mrs. Helen Szabó. The Hungarian Grape Festival was successful on November 5th by the Ladies Aid Society. Our folk dance groups performed under the direction of Mrs. Vilma Szabó. Our Hungarian Heritage Exhibit Committee and the Melius Newspaper Co., will sponsor a bake-demonstration on November 15th. A United Thanksgiving Service will be held on November 23rd, in our church. The Community Children’s Choir and the Allen Park Symphony Choir will participate. The Christian Youth Fellowship Christmas Social will be held on De­cember 6th. Members are making plans for the gala event. The Dorcas Guild had a successful Art and Fashion Show in our audito­rium. Thanks to everyone who helped and patronized it. Statistics—Baptisms: Karen Maureen Doughty, daughter of Timothy P. Doughty and Guyla E. Mosso; Stacey Lynn Van Nostrand, daughter of Den­nis M. Van Nostrand and Jean Jay Groziu; Angela Marie Guszi, daughter of Frank R. Gyuszi and Charlene C. Acker. — Marriages: Pearl R. Németh and Robert J. Dillard were married on September 10th, Robert E. Pegler and Eleanor L. Laczo on September 24th, Charles R. Casanova and Paula M. Poletto on October 15th, and John Maniel and Karen Köteles on October 22nd. CARTERET, N. J. For many years at communion ser­vices individual cups were used for the English language congregation and the common cup for the Hungarian. At the request of many members the common cup is now being offered to the people at the English language services as a choice. Since Pentecost the “first table” receives wine from the common cup, the rest from individual cups. The success of the September 11 Chinese Auction sponsored by the Ju­nior Women’s Guild surpassed all ex­pectations. The Lorantffy Society served hundreds of Hungarian style sausage sandwiches and stuffed cabbage at the Carteret Ethnic Festival on September 18; they received a commendation for their “tasty” work. The exhibition of Hungarian embroidery staged by the Hungarian Folk-Art Group (John and Jolán Benga from Perth Amboy) was simply beautiful. The seventy year old Hungarian flag in the church was taken to the Hun­garian Festival held at the New Jersey Garden State Art Center on September 10; William Kantor, Jr. was our standard-bearer in the procession. Funerals: Stephen Bodnar, 77 and James Cromwell, 76. Joseph Adam, 72 years old, an elder of the Church Coun­cil for over 20 years, on October 19th; Alexander Sebok, Sr., 78 years old, a past elder, on September 3rd; Steven Suto, 62 years old, on October 12th. DUQUESNE, PA. The Sunday School donated an American flag and a Christian flag to the congregation. The dedication of these flags was on October 2nd - World Communion Sunday, with the partici­pation of Sunday School pupils and teachers, during the English Worship Service. 115 of our members received communion. Our Annual Fall Fellowship Dinner was held on October 30th this year. A short program was presented by the Women’s Club. Mrs. Clara Kish, a life-long faithful member of our church was buried on October 31st. Interment followed in our cemetery. Election Day Dinner was hosted by our women with substantial financial and moral success. A newly formed choir is preparing for its first performance later this year under the direction of John Paul Dar­­nay, Jr. We are sharing favorite hymns with church members by using them during our regular worship services. The first step on the improvement, of our kitchen was undertaken by install­ing bakers’ ovens. Our Christmas schedule is as follows: Thursday, Dec. 22, 7 p.m. communion service Christmas Eve candle-light ser­vice; Christmas Day, Sunday regular services 9:30 a.m. Hungarian, 11 a.m. English with communion. We may have caroling during the holiday seasons. Our congregation received the tragic news of the death of Mrs. Margaret Szőke, our former pastor’s wife during his service in this congregation. On the day of her funeral our bells were tolled. The congregation and the pastor and his wife expressed their con­dolences to the family with flowers. McKeesport, pa. The annual Salad Bar & Card Party of the Women’s Guild was held on November 16th. The Lord’s Supper was served on November 20 at both Worship Services. For “shut-ins” the Lord’s Supper was taken to their homes. We celebrated Thanksgiving Day on November 24th with a combined ser­vice at 11:00 a.m. On the first Advent Day, November 27, the members of the confirmation classes took part in a short candle­light ceremony. Funerals: Mrs. Ethel Darnay, .79, died on October 23 after a long ill­ness. Funeral service was held in our church on October 26. Officiating were the local minister, Rt. Rev. Louis Nagy, and Rev. Louis Illés from Duquesne. Mrs. Mary Ann Ukasik, 55, died unexpectedly on October 30. Funeral service was held in our church on No­vember 2. May God comfort the members of the families.
