MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 13 NEWS FROM THE CONGREGATIONS The Western Classis meeting was held on February 13, 1972 at our Akron church. The next meeting will be at Youngstown. Ohio later part of this year. ★ New York Classis meeting will be on April 16, 1972 at 2 p.m. in Cliffside, N. J. (76 Palisade Ave. Rear). ★ Eastern Classis meeting will be on April 23 at 3 p.m. in Bethlehem, Pa. ★ AKRON, OHIO During the last month our minister as the new Dean of the Western Classis visited our West Coast congregations. He preached in our Hollywood and Ontario churches. With the Reverend Bertalan Negyessy they visited the Phoenix, Arizona Hungarians and they established a new* congregation there. The minister of the new church is coming from Europe. On March 12th, 132 persons participated in the lenten holy communion service. On March 12th Géza Csatlós was our March 15th banquet’s speaker. On March I9th our minister said the opening prayer in the Hungarian Home on our March 15th celebration. The main speaker was Hugo Pfahler. (His speach is in our English section.) The attorney of our Lorantffy Care Center, William F. Schopper was murdered on March 8th in his office. ALLEN PARK, MICH. The Annual Congregational Meeting was held on Sunday, February 20. The church register report noted that in 1971 there were 24 baptisms (23 infants and 1 adult) 11 weddings, 25 young people confirmed and 16 communicants died. The Lord’s Supper was administered on the traditional six occasions of our faith. Income totalled $76,118 in the operating fund and $25,696 in the Building Fund (mortgage retirement). Nonduplicated organizational income was $14,919. Thus total income of the church and its organizations was $116,733. Our fine organizations donated $29,151 to the church operating fund and the building fund. Gratitude was expressed by the meeting to the officers and members of the Ladies Aid Society, the Dorcas Guild, the Men’s Guild, the Sunday School staff, the two Choirs and our three Youth Groups. The Lord’s Supper was observed for Lent on Sunday, February 27. Large congregations received the Elements on this occasion. One Great Hour of Sharing was planned for Sunday, March 5. Photographs of the work in Buenos Aires and the Gran Chaco were displayed on the bulletin boards. The Hungarian Reformed mission there receives a monthly donation from our congregation. The Rev. Imre Szabó is responsible for the spiritual leadership of our brethren scattered throughout Argentina. He has presented our Church Council with a complete report of the mission program. Confirmation will take place on Palm Sunday. Class members have shared in regular study since the first week of October. 1972 confirmands include: Charles Arvai, Kenneth Gallaro, Terry Handley, Dawn Hodi, Alan Horcsik, Tina Jacobs, Karen Knox, Linda Köteles, Edward Marek, Deborah Molnár, Larry Ponto, Cathy Thomas, Donna Toth and Ronald Vig. The Ladies Aid Society is serving a dinner in honor of the class and their family members. The rite of Confirmation takes place at a combined English and Hungarian language service at 10 a.m. on Palm Sunday. Easter Day Communion services will be held at 9:30 a.m. in English and 11 a.m. in Hungarian. From our Church Register: David B. Combos and Anne F. Somerset were united in marriage on February 12. Miss Bertha Sándor died on February 12, Mr. James Pirosko died on February 21, Mr. Bela Koszta died on February 28. We share in the grief of the bereaved families. The annual congregation meeting was held on January 30. The former officers were re-elected: Edward Erdie, chief elder; John Simon, vice-chief elder; Julius Szalai, treasurer; Leslie Fekete, secretary. New elders: Balint Balogh and Stephen Toth. Women’s Guild: President, Mrs. John Simon; Treasurer, Mrs. John Fabian. Dr. Andrew Harsanyi, dean, and John Nemish, chief elder of our Eastern Classis, paid their annual visit to our church on February 26. CARTERET, N. J. Recently elected elders and officers were honored at the well attended Installation Dinner on March 5th. Also honored was Mr. Alexander Kazup, custodian for 12 years, who will retire April 1st. Pastor, Chief Elder and the Presidents of the two women’s organizations presented him with an Omega wrist-watch. The order of Holy Week and Easter worship services will be sent to all church families and friends in the customary pastoral letter. A bilingual communion service is again scheduled for Holy Thursday when the bulletin will show the complete liturgy on parallel columns in English and in Hungarian. The Rev. Dr. George Szőnyi, pastor from Diósgyőr, Hungary and now' a research student in Princeton, will preach at two services during Holy Week. Baptism: Michael Derek, son of Michael Lukach and his wife, the former Ethel Milak, on February 20; godparents: Zoltán Milak, Gary Milak and Miss Mary Milak. Wedding: Vincent Garitta and Elaine Irene Gencsi, on March 5. The Lorantffy Society will celebrate the 50th anniversary of its foundation on Pentecost Sunday, May 21. The Junior Women’s Guild has the following officers for 1972: Mrs. Helen Sheridan president, Mrs. Violet Nemish vice-president, Mrs. Judy Sendelsky and Mrs. Margie Kara secretaries, Mrs. Helen Nemish treasurer, Mrs. Helen Hamer chaplain. DUQUESNE, PA. Wedding: David McManus and Shirley Stiver were married on February 22nd in our chapel. We held a special Lenten Communion Sunday to make up for the snowy day in February, on March 12th. 235 members participated all together, in the church and in their homes.
