10 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ THE SPIRIT OF FREE ENTERPRISE 1 AM THE SPIRIT of free enterprise. Where I prevail, abundance lies and the torch of liberty is held high. Where I prevail, happiness abounds and immigrants are drawn from afar. Where I prevail, opportunity lies. For with me, man needs no more than God’s green earth. Where I prevail, men and events pulsate and throb with the heartbeat of barter and trade. I breathe life into a land but only because I am a reflection—-an outlet—of a Divine Spark that impels man to provide for his young and his young to be. I provide that spark—that incentive—that takes men into commerce and trade. I provide that spark which bids man to consume or, if he will, postpone the fruits of his labor, the dividends of his industry. I provide that spark that bids man, if he will, apply the wages of his effort to educating his children or his children’s children. I provide that spark that bids man, if he will, apply the fruits of his labor and of his enterprise to other man’s travail or to the uplift of his people. Then too, I am the great leveller. Because of me, the poor may become rich, the humble mighty, the thrifty secure. I tumble ancient barriers of war, of strife. Prejudice and pride are driven off by the pressure of my presence. But when I am denied to struggling man, hope dies and incentive is choked. The zest for new endeavor becomes stale and the exciting thirst for redoubled effort turns to dross and man’s divine spirit withers and dies. I am the spirit of free enterprise. Keep me in your land.
