MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 21 YOUTH NEWS On March 28, 1971 the Eastern Area Youth Federation of the Bethlen Youth Federation met at the Perth Amboy center for a quarterly conference. This conference, the Amboy club decided, would engage the church youth in a discussion on one of the most prevalent topics of our culture—drugs. We felt that it was time for a Christian-based discussion to bring forth the proper attitudes toward taking drugs. Reverend Howard Mildman, minister of the Watchung Avenue Presbyterian Church in North Plainfield, New Jersey, presented his lecture on “Drugs and the Religious Experience”. Reverend Mildman’s starting point was the fact that many illegal drug-users claim that their “trips” are filled with religious overtones which enable them to “see”, “hear”, and “talk” to God. Extensive research done by this minister indicated that there are definitely times when an unearthly feeling will pursue the druguser; but, Reverend Mildman is in no way convinced that this be an accepted way of reaching God. For one thing, the drug-user loses his personal identity —he is aware of himself as a living, breathing being; but, not as himself (an individual) with certain faults, certain attributes, and who occupies a very real position in a practical world. Instead the drug-user’s mind flies off on fantasy journeys in which he believes his expanded and liberated thoughts enable him to meet God face to face. Reverend Mildman continues to say that the drug-user evades the basic doctrine of Christianity—which is to have a personal relationship with God. This God to Christian relationship is a working partnership which deals with the problems we encounter in daily living. It is being able to talk with God whenever we need Him, not just when we are “high” on drugs. And it is believing God’s promise that His Son died for every man—rich or poor, intelligent or not—leaving an open door to all for salvation. There is a growing sense of personal loneliness in our youth culture. Young adults are banding together and rebelling against the establishment, only to form their own conformity. Reverend Mildman considers this segregation to be a direct outcome of drug use. Whatever kind of experience the drug-user encounters is purely individual. And since his mind is engaged artificially he can never share his experience with others after he has come “down” from his “high” when he is again able to communicate. So the more drugs he uses, the more often he isolates himself from his needs. And isn’t this evasion of life in direct opposition to the example Christ set for us? Reverend Mildman stated that mature religion is not isolation, but relations; it is the transformation of the Golden Rule into life’s experiences. Our bodies and minds are temples for the Word of God and we should not pollute them with artificial and unnatural stimulants and depressants. Once we discipline our lives to the teachings of Christ we will have no desire to use drugs, for Christ will always be there at our side to guide and support us. Adler Simon ugyancsak 50 dollárt adott erre a célra. Keresztelés: Június 13-án kereszteltük meg Laite Henry Pált, Latié Allan presbiterünknek és nejének gyermekét. Esketés: Június 19-én eskettük meg templomunkban Kropf Pétert és Martinék Annát. Temetés: Május 21-én temettük el Adler Sándort életének 89-ik esztendejében. Adler Sándor hűséges presbiterünknek Adler Simonnak édesapja volt. 50 éves jubileum: Június 13-án ünnepelték egyházi és baráti körben 50 éves házassági évfordulójukat Gergye Mihály és felesége. Palást átadás Akronban. Június 8-án lelkészünk mondotta a nyitó imát és a záró áldást Copley High School érettségiző diákjainak évzáró ünnepélyén. Július 11-én lesz évi nagy zenés piknikünk a barbertoni Szent Miklós parkban. (1051 Robinson Ave.) Mindenkit szeretettel hívunk és várunk. A lelkészi szolgálat betöltése augusztus 1-vel válik esedékessé. Pünkösd alkalmával Nt. Pohóczky Béla hirdette az Igét. Pünkösd alkalmával konfirmált fiataljaink első ízben éltek úrvacsorával, név szerint: Göndöcz Tünde, Németh Carol, Hegedűs József, Hegedűs István, Németh David és Tóth István. Göndöcz Enikő az adakozás alatt játszott az orgonán. Június 6-án, vasárnap d.u. volt a vasárnapi iskolás piknik a Domey Parkban. Az egyház ezévben is 75 dollárt bocsátott rendelkezésükre.
