MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 13 MAGYAR CHURCH ái>eard) for (gob! Psalms 139: 1-12; I. Kings 19: 9-13a. The total absence of all matter, i.e. a vacuum, is almost impossible to achieve on earth. It has not been possible to ban air completely from any type of container, as long as we remain witbin our atmosphere. Fortunately for us, the same thing is true about God. No matter how hard humanity is trying to become “God-forsaken”, and to declare God dead, the Lord remains eternally present everywhere. It is only the dullness of our mind and senses that keeps us from observing God everywhere. A devout Christian continuously looks for signs and proofs of the omnipresence of the Lord. He cannot truly rest until he finds such proofs, for he is at peace only when he is at peace with his Creator. God wants us to search for Him, He wants us to find Him, so that our mortal minds may find spiritual contentment. “Seek ye the Lord!...” is a very frequent warning in the Old Testament. Where do we find the signs of God’s presence? Such signs may be found anywhere and everywhere in the universe. As the theme of one Vacation Bihle School curriculum expresses this: “Search for God’s Hidden Treasures!” What are God's hidden treasures? What are the signs, proofs of His presence? They are mostly things that we usually do not hold valuable. Gold and diamonds and other valuable treasures are included, but they are not vital to human life. The air, water, light, sound, rain, sunshine, gravity and untold hosts of other rarely appreciated everyday gifts of the Lord are the “hidden treasures”, the proof that God is here and that He cares and that He wants us to know this! Ecology, the science of our environment made us more aware of this lately. The atheist may deny the existence of God but he can only prove that his mind and senses are unable to accept Him — he can never prove that there is no God! We, Hungarian Reformed Christians have a “sixth sense” in addition to the traditional five, to accept and to verify the presence and thus the existence of God. This “sense” is our faith. By faith alone is man saved, by faith alone man finds his Creator. When Elijah was in panic and distress, when he searched for the Lord in the desert and in the cave, storm, fire, earthquake and other phenomena of nature did not satisfy him. The Lord was not in those elements of nature. Elijah’s senses were dulled by distress, bis natural senses could not hear the Lord’s call until he became still. Then he heard a small still (inner) voice, he wrapped his face in his mantle, for he knew that he was in the presence of the Lord. The best proof of God’s presence, the only possible way of finding a satisfying relationship with Him is by listening to the “still small (inner) voice.” The rest, the outer signs, the “hidden treasures” are only so many affirmations of this basic discovery. Some will tell you that time is flying and you must make full use of every hour. Lust, greed and other human weaknesses will throw temptation your way, but they will offer only temporary, shallow satisfaction. As you plunge into nature’s arms in the summer, even then you will discover that except a sunburn and aching muscles you will bring home very few lasting impressions. First you must find God through your conscience, then you can continue to search for “hidden treasures” in nature, proofs that you were right, God is omnipresent. This summer you should use every opportunity to search for proofs of God’s presence in nature, but first you must become still, and listen, then you may come to the great, perhaps the greatest discovery of your life, that you have found God, in your own conscience. May God grant you a successful search! Louis llles
