MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 11 DETROIT CELEBRATES On Sunday, June 14th, the largest American Hungarian Reformed Church celebrated the 5th anniversary of the building of their new church. The day could not have been better. The sunshine came down upon the whole Detroit area with golden rays. As we arrived early in the morning to the new church on Allen Road, Allen Park, Mich., others were already there working faithfully so that everything should be in order and appropriate to the festive occasion. This was the second time that I visited this congregation and saw the buildings, but they impressed me no less than the first time. The spaciousness of the whole complex, the large church, the ample parking area, the air conditioned social hall, which accomodates 600 people, the educational facilities, Sunday School rooms, club rooms, parlors, offices filled the hearts of those visitors who were there for the first time with awe; they only could say “among Hungarian Reformed congregations in America there is no other church which would be better equipped for serving God and the community in our modern age.” The combined worship service, the wonderful singing of the Junior and Senior Choirs, under the able leadership of Ernest Káplár, Organist and Director of Christian Education, lifted up high the hearts of the people. The Hungarian Flag, presented by the young people, was dedicated by the Rt. Rev. Árpád George, Secretary of the Hungarian Reformed Federation of America, Washington, D. C., who also brought the English message. The Hungarian pulpit gown given to the Very Rev. Tibor Tóth, Dean, by Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Varga, was dedicated by the Rishop, who spoke on the theme “Praise ye the Lord!”, emphasizing that for all the accomplishments the church has achieved we ought to give thanks to Almighty God and praise the name of our Lord for ever. The banquet hall was filled to capacity when Bill F. Antal, English President, greeted the guests and members, who came from far and near. Michael Biró, Chief Elder, spoke briefly on the history of the church. Dean Tibor Tóth introduced the representatives of the various organizations of the church; the women, the men, youth, choirs, Sunday School and The Processional. The Rt. Rev. Arpad George preaching.
