MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 13 NEWS FROM THE CONGREGATIONS ONE GREAT HOUR OF SHARING MARCH 16, 1969 Church World Service, the relief and rehabilitation agency of 32 Protestant denominations in the United States of America will sponsor the One Great Hour of Sharing program on Sunday, March 16th, 1969. At that time, in thousands of churches, offerings will be brought for the support of the work carried on in every part of the globe. Refugees, disaster victims, special projects for the needy and hungry of the world depend upon your generous help. Millions of people live far from their homeland, others are being persecuted, ill-clothed, ill-fed, and infected with diseases. Starvation takes the life of many in Biafra-Nigeria. Our churches are asked to find the ways and means to join in this nationwide crusade by using the special offering envelopes for this purpose. AKRON, OHIO Our total income during 1968 (including the amount received from the First Hungarian United Church of Christ) $89,843, total expenses (including the full mortgage payment) $72,347; balance in the treasury on December 31, 1968 $13,049, on the Building Fund, $13,157. Total money on hand for 1969 in the church treasury and with the organizations: $29,319. CARTERET, N. J. Leonard Sendelsky was elected chief elder at the congregational meeting January 26; Francis Ullersberger and Menyhért Tóth will serve as vice chief elders, Frank Vérségi as secretary, Andrew Pross as treasurer and Julius Reisz as financial secretary. New elders are Walter B. Kovács, Louis Tomori, Michael Yeges and Joseph Timari, Jr. Other elders, some of them reelected at this meeting, are Joseph Adam, Alexander Comba, Louis Hollo, Roy Jensen, Béla Kántor, John Nemish, Alexander Peter, Vito Stasolla, Louis J. Szabó. Louis J. Szabó, who stepped down from the office of chief elder after ten years of service, was given high tribute for his devoted work. Also commended for their past services as elders were Frank Deak, Stephen Kovács (Cranford) and Geza Megyesi. The memory of Elder Charles Varga, who passed away last December, was recorded in the meeting’s minutes noting the congregation’s gratitude and affection. A dinner, honoring the outgoing officers and welcoming the new ones, was held February 9. A nice crowd gathered in spite of the heavy snow storm. Wedding: Imre Kaiser and Jolán Timari. Burials: Mrs. Andrew Barta, Sr., Mrs. Charles Comba, Sr. and John Lukacs. Under the title “Lenten School of Religion” weekly bible studies will be conducted during Lent, every Thursday at 2 p.m. in Hungarian and at 7 p.m. in English. DUQUESNE, PA. Our Annual Congregational Meeting and Fellowship Dinner were held on January 26th. The following were elected: Richard Heyz chief elder, Michael Beres assistant elder for the Hungarian Congregation, Donald S. Koester assistant elder for the English Congregation, Joseph Voros treasurer, John Estu auditor, Robert Bodnar offering recorder, Frank Kottán, Jr. secretary. New councilmen elected were John P. Darnay, Alan Palagy. The Church Council called James Kottán to serve as deacon. Income in the year 1968 $23,305, expenses $29,308; total assets $241,033. Our mortgage will be paid up in July 1969. A mortgage burning ceremony is being planned by the Planning Committee for October 12th, 1969. The Women’s Club, and all other church organizations are preparing for our first bazaar in years. The bazaar is planned for early June. Our Junior Youth Fellowship hosted a Valentine Day Fellowship Meeting on February 16th. The local Protestant churches’ Youth Fellowships attended; the meeting was very successful. Beginning Ash Wednesday, we will hold Wednesday evening services at 7:30 p.m. during Lent.
