14 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ HUNGARIAN STATE OFFICIAL’S VISIT TO GENEVA Dr. Joseph Prantner, Hungarian Secretary of State for Church Affairs, paid a three day visit to the World Council of Churches, the Lutheran World Federation and the World Alliance of Reformed Churches in Geneva, Switzerland. Interviewed during his visit in June Dr. Prantner said international Christian groups can “help believers and non-believers, Christians and Marxists, to co-operate still more than in the past in the interest of development and the future of mankind.” He also said that the invitation to visit Geneva “will help considerably to promote the further development of 20 years of co-operation in many fields, despite ideological differences.” Asked about the ecumenical situation in Hungary, Dr. Prantner said that Hungarian Protestantism has “made a great contribution towards the progress of the Hungarian people and towards the welfare of the whole of mankind.” Protestant churches in Hungary, he said, have found their ‘modus vivendi’ in the socialist society and at the same time have remained true to “the progressive traditions of their churches . . . Following the example of Hungarian Protestantism, Hungarian Catholicism has also found a ‘modus vivendi’ with its people and with the socialist society in Hungary.” (EPS) BELGIAN PROTESTANTS ON MIXED MARRIAGES The 116th meeting of the synod of the Belgian Christian Missionary Church held in Mons, Belgium, early in June pointed out with respect to mixed marriages that “the difference in faiths often make daily life more difficult, especially with relation to church membership, worship, and religious training of children.” Regrets were expressed “that, in spite of Vatican II, the aggiornamento which followed, has not yet in any real or significant way influenced Roman catholic legislation in this matter.” The synod suggested that conversations be undertaken “in order to discover and establish the necessary conditions for reciprocal recognition of all marriages performed in the respective churches, including inter-faith marriages.” The American Hungarian Reformed Presbyters’ Association INVITATION The Annual Conference of the American Hungarian Reformed Presbyters’ Association will be held in the Bethlen Home, Ligonier, Pa., on August 31 and September 1, 1969. We are anticipating full attendance of our ministers, elders and interested church members. All reservations for hotel and motel accommodations to be made not later than August 25th through the Rt. NEWS FROM TIIE CONGREGATIONS AKRON, OHIO Our July 13th annual musical picnic was the greatest picnic we ever had. Attendance was close to 1,000 and our clear profit exceeded $2,500. Thanks for the good work to our hard workers. We had guests from Alliance, Niles, Youngstown, Lorain and Cleveland. We had a Summer Bible School for our children between August 4 and 15. Forty members of our church visited the Detroit Hungarian Reformed Church on August 16th. During July we received new Hungarian Reformed refugees from Italy. They are: István Benkóczy, László Breznai and József Vinczi. Weddings: Tibor Papp and Miss Ilona Vilis, Stephen Petrus and Mrs. Maria Hegyi, Levente Batizy and Miss Patricia Lynn, Craig Hoffman and Miss Susan Miklós were married in our church during the past months. Baptism: Tibor Richert, son of Kenneth and Agnes Richert, on July 27th. Godparents are Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Kiss, the chief elder of the Niles Hungarian Reformed Church and his wife. We will have Holy Communion services on August 24th, Sunday. BETHLEHEM, PA. During the summer the following members visited Hungary: Mrs. J. Szöcsik, Mrs. J. Hegedűs, Mr. and Mrs. A. Remenár, and Mr. and Mrs. St. Turoczy. Mr. and Mrs. R. Csizma and their daughter Robin took a trip to Greece for a memorable vacation. The granddaughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Simon arrived from Hungary for a visit with her grandparents in Bethlehem. We had a doggie-roast for members and friends in the backyard of Mr. and Mrs. J. Waros on August 10. Funeral: Mrs. Joseph Huber (Mary Kovach), 79, on June 23. CARTERET, N. J. 100 communicants gathered around the Lord’s Table for “new-bread”communion. In spite of low attendance a good Summer Bible School was conducted early in August. Six young people will go to the National B.Y.F. Conference; they will have two adult advisors. The date for the annual congregational banquet has been set for Saturday, November 1. It will be a dinner-dance. This is also the target date for the completion of the full renovation of Bethlen Hall.
