MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 9 CONGRESS CONSIDERS BILL TO PROMOTE BILINGUAL EDUCATION (ACNS). — Congress is now considering a number of proposals to promote bilingual education in the United States. If any of these bills become law. bilingual education in the public schools for children who have a mother tongue other than English may soon become a reality. At least 35 separate bills in the House of Representatives and one in the Senate recognize the harm that comes to the individual child and the loss to the nation that Results when the mother tongue is neglected. Most of the House bills apply to all languages, but the Senate bill. S. 428, introduced by Senator Yarborough of Texas and co-sponsored by a number of other Senators, would benefit only speakers of Spanish. There are indications, however, that the latter bill, presently before the Senate Committee on Labor and Public Welfare, may be broadened to cover all languages if enough public interest is shown in the other languages. The idea of providing bilingual schooling in order to increase the learning power of children who do not yet know English well, and in order to pressure our nation’s priceless language resources is srongly supported by many teacher organizations, including the National Education Association. , Dr. Bruce Gaarder, Chief of the Modern Foreign I Language Section of the U. S. Office of Education, has 1 pointed out that besides English there are more than I fifty important languages spoken in the United States and our need for them in government, in the universities, and in business is so great that we spend many millions every year to develop speakers and scholars in these languages. Yet we do almost nothing to preserve and develop language competence in the millions of our children who speak them as mother tongue. It is not too late for interested citizens to write their Senators and Representatives and give their views on the importance of making bilingual schooling available. WHEN THE CENTRAL BAPTIST CHURCH, the old State Street Presbyterian Church, JacksonviRe, 111., was torn down recently, a galvanized sheet iron box was discovered under the rubble. Among the items found in it, which had been placed there in 1885, was a new Bible published by the American Bible Society in 1863. It bore a $1.25 price mark. Today the ABS sells whole Bibles for as low as 95(5 each ad “Good News for Modern Man,” the New Testament in Today’s English Version, cost only 25(5. (To be continued) Stephen Kovács THE EARLIEST ASSOCIATION of any size or permanence organized to distribute Bibles was probably the Canstein Bible Institute, formed in Germany about 1710. The Institute printed Luther’s Bible and by 1722 also issued Scriptures in Bohemian and Polish. The British and Foreign Bible Society, the “mother” of the American Bible Society, was organized in London in 1804, and the ABS was formed 12 years later.
