MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 11 Hungarian Theologians Receive Doctor's Degrees Two Hungarian Reformed theologians have recently received doctor’s degrees from foreign universities. The Rev. Elemér Kocsis, instructor at the Reformed Theological Academy of Debrecen, Hungary, was made a Doctor of Theology at the University of Erlangen, West-Germ any. The Rev. Gyula Bárczay received his Doctor of Theology “summa cum laude” from the University of Basel, Switzerland. Dr. Bárczay worked in Basel under the eminent Professor Karl Barth. At present, Dr. Bárczay is a guest and post-doctorate student at the Chicago University.---------•--------ATHEISTIC PROPAGANDA IN HUNGARY The November number of the Hungarian Communist monthly, “Társadalmi Szemle” has called for carrying “militant atheistic propaganda right into the family circle”. The article says religion is still deeply rooted in the Hungarian people, even among party members, and calls on every Communist to begin with his own family, and give priority to the atheistic education of the children. EASTERN CLASSIS YOUTH FEDERATION MEETING JANUARY 31st The Eastern Classis Youth Federation will have its first meeting in 1960 on Sunday, January 31st. It will be held in the Hungarian Reformed Church of Roebling, New Jersey. Official invitations were sent to all member organizations such as Bethlehem, Carteret, New York, Perth Amboy, Staten Island and Trenton. Young people of other churches, which have no local organization are also cordially invited. Meeting will start at 3:00 P.M. Sunday afternoon. NEWS FROM THE CARTERET, N. J. We experienced a richly blessed Christmas season with record attendance and donations. Our annual congregational meeting was held earlier this year than usual. We are grateful to God for a year of spiritual growth and material progress. The annual meeting elected the following church officers for 1960: Louis J. Szabó, chief elder, William Lazar and Stephen P. Kovács, vice chief elders, Geza Megyesi, treasurer, Andrew Prross, assistant treasurer. Geza Megyesi, Alexander Peters, Bert Pokol, Andrew Pross, Louis J. Szabó and Louis Szabó were re-elected to the 21 member Board of Elders. Geza Buday and Stephen Phillips resigned as elders. After expressing the congregation’s appreciation for their faithful services through many years, the annual meeting filled their places with Alexander Gomba and Joseph Cinege. Alexander Persely was elected an alternate elder. The annual meeting also voted to have a set of local church ordinances drawn up. DETROIT, Mich. We had a wonderful Christmas Holiday, experiencing the blessings of God at every service. On Christmas Day we had an attendance of 1100 at both services, with 896 partaking of the Lord’s Supper. The offering at the services during Christmas week was $5,640.21. Election of officers took place on December 27th. Mr. Charles Kiss is the new Chief Elder and Mr. Béla Antal is the president of the English Congregation. CONGREGATIONS The Christian Youth Fellowship went caroling. They donated the entire proceeds to our new church building fund. They had a wonderful Christmas Party at the home of the Pitels and an enjoyable fellowship at the home of the Hodis. The Christian Youth Fellowship elected the following new officers: James Szopo, president, Zoltán Horosz, vice president, Barbara Smerick, secretary, Thomas Steinhauer, treasurer. Pastor Toth installed the new officers in the course of the December 20 church service. DUQUESNE, PA. A uniform classified report will appear in the next issue of Magyar Church of all our congregations from the year 1959. Also, we will bring a report of our congregational meeting of 1960, which was held at our fellowship dinner instead on a Sunday morning service. PERTH AMBOY, N. J. The elements of the Holy Common during the Christmas holidays were offered by the following: Mrs. Bálint Vash, Mrs. Daniel Sebestyén, Mr. & Mrs. William Kovács (Hoy Ave.), Mr. Frank Csordás and Mr. & Mrs. Edward Czebrowski. Total number participating in the Lord’s Supper: 544. Our holiday assistant was Barnabas Rőczey from Philadelphia. May God bless his further studies and services in the Church. The Christmas trees in the church and school were given by Dr. & Mrs. William Tóth; and Andrew and Joseph Rácz. Many thanks to them for their thoughtfulness. The choir members went caroling and the donations received will be used towards their new choir robe fund. Their rehearsal is every Wednesday from 7 to 9 P.M. The choir director, Mr. Robert Wert asks more men and women to join the choir and help singing during worship services. We are organizing an excursion to Miami Florida from April 21st to May 1st; round trip bus fare, hotels and sight seeing tours are all included in the price of $125. Make your reservations now! The new officers elected for 1960 are: Mrs. Priscilla Jenkins, President; Mrs. Margarert Silágyi, Vice President; Mrs. Betty Larson, Secretary; Mrs. Helen Deák, Treasurer and Mrs. Irene Tariska, Chaplain. The Men’s Club’s officers are: Frank Zámbó, President, Norman Rhodes, Vice President; Norman Bright, Secretary; John Tariska, Treasurer; George Tóth, Chaplain and Steve Orosz, Comptroller. ROEBLING, N. J. Our Sunday School had a very successful Christmas Party on December 20th. The Youth Fellowship sponsored a social, which featured the showing of the film “For God’s Glory”, the new film on Calvin and the Reformed Church. The Young Women’s Guild sponsored a trip to Philadelphia on January 17th to see the spectacular movie: Ben Hur.
