10 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ DUQUESNE, PA. Among the many blessings of the past year the most outstanding one, according to the Pastor’s Report, was “the new way” which God has shown to us and through which He led us for the first time. Following this new way we left on the wayside many things which are not necessary, which should not be part of the life of a Christian congregation. We left them by the wayside because we stepped on higher ground, we lifted the level of our church life. “To him who heeds the way I will show God’s deliverance.” We thank God that He gave us enough faith to understand this. The average attendance of Sunday worship services was 180 and the average number partaking of the Lord’s Supper was 223 which is the highest we ever attained. In our Sunday School we have 100 enrolled in twelve classes with an administrative and teaching staff of twenty. 30 of our children had perfect attendance and received recognition for same, 10 of them for the fifth straight year. On the financial side of the new way a great accomplishment was made. The total income was smaller than the previous year since the absence of group-contributions left a big gap, but the total of individual contributions was greater than before — even though the past year was financially uncertain for many of our members. The average of family contributions was $103.72 and that of an individual confirmed member $57.92 — it was done willingly, cheerfully, as everyone decided in his heart. The total income of the year was $24,000.00 and the disbursement amounted to the same. Our indebtedness is $74,700.00. Our congregational life was enriched by the work and fellowship of the following organizations: Women’s Club, Men’s Club, Friendly Circle, Youth Fellowship, Flower Committee, Adult and Children’s Choir, Boy Scout Troop and Explorers Post, and the Girl Scout Troop. Our membership is 455 including children, confirmed 350, voting 285. Sunday, January 18, the annual congregational meeting was held, when we elected and installed the following officials: Elmer W. Shigo, Chief Elder; Andrew Sapos and James Lewis, Elders; Joseph Voros, Treasurer; Joseph Toth, Auditor; Joseph Kallery, Secretary; and Charles Nagy, Jr., Recorder of Offering. Members of the Church Council are: Frank Kottán, Jr., James Lewis, Daniel Ochiva, Elmer Shigo and Joseph Voros (1959); John P. Darnay, Frank Horvath, Ernest Kovach, Charles Nagy, Jr., Andrew Sapos, William E. Wargo (I960); John Estu, Joseph Kallery, Julius Nagy, Joseph Toth and Andrew Wargo (1961). The Women’s Club elected the following officers: Mrs. Ernest Kovach, President; Mrs. James Lewis, Vice-President; Mrs. Andrew Sapos, Secretary; Mrs. Frank Homoki, Treasurer. The Men’s Club elected Andrew Gougler, president; B. Robert Balder, Vice-President; Joseph Olah, Jr., Secretary-Treasurer. CARTERET The January 25 annual congregational meeting elected Joseph Adam, Roy Jensen, Bela Kantor, Stephen Kovács, William Lazar, William Nagy and John Nemish elders, Louis J. Szabó Chief Elder, William Lazar and Stephen Phillips Vice-Chief Elders, Geza Megyesi Treasurer. They were sworn in at the worship services on February 1. An installation dinner was held in honor of all new officers of the church and its organizations. The annual meeting also changed the official name of the Church to “Hungarian Reformed Church of Carteret, N.J.“, adopted on an optional basis the pledge system and decided to build a second exit from the church basement. A new building fund was created with the view of installing an air conditioning system in the sanctuary. The meeting room at Bethlen Hall was completed, furnished and already used by the Junior Women’s Guild at their February meeting. The Men’s Club is now finishing the adjoining kitchenette. A summary financial report shows $42,458.88 income, $31,884.71 expenses, $10,574.17 balance for 1958 (church treasury and organizations). Only indebtedness of the Church is a $6,000 mortgage. The Men’s Club elected as its 1959 officers: Andrew Pross President, Frank Vérségi Vice-President, John Lazar Treasurer, Frank Deak and Stephen Phillips Secretaries, Alex Peters Sergeant-at-Arms, Frank Zsamba, William Nagy and William Lazar Trustees. Lenten services are being held in the church every Wednesday at 7:30 The services are conducted in English on February 25, and March 11. PERTH AMBOY, N. J. The Women’s Guild report in the 1958 yearbook of the church was given by Mrs. Elizabeth Dudich, former President of the Guild. The new officers were sworn in and started the work with faith and hope that by the help of the Lord they may be able to accomplish more than the Guild ever did before. President: Mrs. Irene Tariska, Vice- President: Mrs. Priscilla Jenkins, Secretary: Mrs. Esther Rhodes, Treasurer: Mrs. Margaret Szilágy, Chaplain: Mrs. Elizabeth Dudich. The meetings are on the first and third Tuesdays of each month. All women of our church are asked to join the Guild. The new officers of the Men’s Club, whose names were printed in this paper before, started their work in the new school club room with zeal and enthusiasm. The New Year’s Eve affair brought in $1,579 - 49: expenses being $945.52, a balance of $633.97 remained. The meetings are on every first and third Wednesdays of the month, and the members gather together to do some work on other Wednesdays to furnish the club room and also plans are made to lay asphalt tiles in the unfinished area of the new building. Both Youth organizations of the church are functioning with new vigor since Rolf Ahlers, student minister from Princeton Seminary is with us. The sudden death of one of our best members, Imre Karmazsin, who died of a heart attack, at Elmhurst College, ner Chicago, 111., brought grief and sorrow into the hearts of all of us. Imre wanted to be a minister of the Gospel of our Lord and as a student preached in several chinches. He was a Christian holiday assistant in our church and had .iust returned to school. May his example of Christian life shine before our youth and may Almighty God comfort his family.
