12 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ HUNGARY AND THE UNITED NATIONS The following are excerpts from an address delivered on June 24th at the Carnegie Endowment Center by Mr. Sándor Kiss. On the political scene he was a member of the Hungarian Parliament on the Smallholders’ ticket; he was persecuted by both the Nationalsocialists and the Communists. He is one of the prominent figures among refugee politicians. As an active member of the Reformed Church in Hungary he was an elder and a commissioner to his Church’s Constitutional General Assembly (zsinat). Among Reformed church leaders in America he has many friends who know him as one whose standard of thought and action is his Christian faith. “.........On June 20th 1957 the five member Special Committee of the United Nations finished and issued its report on Hungary. They heard 111 witnesses in different western countries and collected a huge material concerning the Soviet aggression in Hungary last October and November. The Committee has clearly documented that the uprising of the people of Hungary was a pure democratic Revolution which, if only for a few days, liberated the country from the reigne of police terror............. We are deeply grateful to every member of the Committee for the enormous effort made to collect the supporting documentary material. At the same time we can not hide our disappointment in the World Organization of the United Nations, for the lack of necessary actions that could have been taken in order to save the short lived freedom of Hungary. Had it been done in time, we would not be holding our meeting here tonight................ .........What was not done by the United Nations? As soon as the first report about Soviet Military intervention in Hungary has reached New York (October 24, 1956) the Security Council of the UN should have been called into session immediately.................... In case of a Soviet veto an emergency session of the General Assembly would have been in order............. The Assembly should have recognized the fact that the Warsaw Pact provided no excuse for Russia to station troops in Hungary. The Soviet was forced to sign a new pact with the Kadar Government last May in order to give some legal basis for the stationing of its troops in Hungary. According to the Hungarian Constitution neither the Secretary of the Communist Party (Gero) nor the Prime Minister (Hegedűs) were entitled to invite foreign troops to Hungary.................... ......... Within a few hours after the Israeli invasion took place, the Security Council was in session. Within 48 hours an emergency session of the General Assembly was called and according to the resolutions passed Mr. Hammerskjold arrived at the scene of the fighting without the least delay. For 264 hours after the brutal Soviet intervention the Assembly failed to pass a resolution concerning the Hungarian issue.............. The people of Hungary will never forget that the Secretary General did not go to Hungary. There is no power in the world to stop the Official Representative of an 80 member World Organization if he wants to travel on a preannounced route................ The people of Hungary will never forget the double moral standards: we are willing to sanction the small aggressor, and we refuse to do the same with the powerful one......................... ................The organization of the United Nations stands on a cross road today. The Hungarian issue is the milestone.. .it can regain its prestige if it is decided to act........... The excellent and factual report of the Special Committee provides the basis for determined and quick actions. First of all it should demand the implementation of the resolutions already passed. .........What should the United Nations do? .............The Assembly should be called back to an emergency session to act on the report and the recommandations of the Special Committee ................ There is no need for new resolution. The Assembly should, instead, call upon the Soviet Union and its Puppet Hungarian Regime to fully submit to the resolutions passed last November. A deadline must be set, and if the Soviet Union continues to violate the United Nations Charter, sanctions should be used against her, as provided in Chapter VII, Articles 41, 42 and 46. ............. The United Nations should give a chance to Kruschev to prove the sincerity of his statements. The Soviet Union should withdraw its troops from Hungary and pave the way for free elections. According to the Soviet leaders Kadar would continue to stay in power. It would only support the moral power of the Soviet Union if Kadar is reelected by a popular vote of majority. No democracy should fear the freedom of the people...............................” THE LAW OF GOD (Continued) “A man is not justified by work of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ.” Gal. 2:16. There is no man in this world who can say that he constantly fulfills all the laws of God perfectly and therefore God will give him a blessed eternal life in heaven as a reward. We learn from the Law of God, the Ten Commandments, that we all commit sins every day both against God and our fellowmen, and we all would fall into damnation according to the righteous judgment of God unless Jesus had not paid for our law-breakings by his innocent blood and death. Since Jesus had done this from his infinite love towards us, God is willing to forgive our sins and give us a blessed eternal life freely, from grace, for the sake of our Lord Jesus Christ. It would be a great error however if someone would say now: it is not necessary to live by the Ten Commandments of God because we never can fulfill those commandments any way and our salvation in heaven is a free gift of God and not a reward of our doings. A true Christian man admits readily and humbly that indeed he never can deserve heaven as a reward of his goodness, yet till his very last breath he tries to fulfill the Ten Commandments most earnestly. Why?
