10 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ MAGYAR CHURCH SUMMER Summer is here and we certainly don’t need a thermometer to notice it. But Summer is a good, it is a blessed season. With its sunshine and showers Summer ripens the fruits so that they may serve their purpose. Although not in the same way but Summer is an opportunity for men too to become more fit to fulfill their vocation. Most of us shall have at least a couple of weeks vacation in the course of the next two months. Let us use this vacation wisely. Some work around the house will be fine. But don’t try to work more and harder than any other time during the year. Vacation should bring rest and recreation. Work and rest, responsibility and recreation equally belong to the rythm of life — it upsets the spiritual as well as physical balance of a person if either of them is missed. Vacation should be the season when you enjoy your family. Here is the time when you can have long talks with your children — and believe me, they need it. Remember, however, that there is no vacation from God. There is no season when you can stop praying. There is no season when you can stop searching the will of God, when you can stop doing good works or when you can stop trusting the Lord. On the contrary, your Summer vacation will offer you some special opportunities for quiet reflection. Therefore, during your vacation, don’t miss to pick up your Bible and read it. Don’t miss to attend Church on Sundays, wherever you are — or if you happened to be at such a remote place where you possibly cannot find a church why don’t you try to sit down with your family, read a Bible passage, discuss it, and pray together. I’m sure you will also be able to sing a Psalm or a Hymn. Try it but once and you shall see that family worship is one of the most thrilling experiences of Christian life. As I said, there is no vacation from God. Rather, your vacation should be for God. It should be a season when you and all members of your family experience a renewal in body and soul becoming more fit than ever to live a good, strong, full Christian life. Andrew Harsanyi Archdean Béky Returned to Office The congregations of the Free Magyar Reformed Church in America, by a unanimous vote, returned the Rt. Rev. Zoltán Béky to the office of archdean for another three-year term. Mr. John Darnay of McKeesport was elected new Chief Elder of the Diocese. The General Assembly honored the Rev. George Borshy Kerekes by making him an honorary Archdean with the title of Right Reverend. GENERAL ASSEMBLY NEWS The Diocese of the Free Magyar Reformed Church of America held its General Assembly at McKeesport, Pa. on July 4th, 1957. It passed a number of important resolutions among which here are the most notable ones: It created a Committee on Missions to work out the Church’s missionary program, including church expansion, the care for the spiritual needs of dispersed Hungarian Reformed people at home and abroad, publication of Magyar Church as well as support of candidates for the ministry. The Committee, consisting of the Archdean as chairman and of Dr. Andrew Harsanyi and Rev. Aladár Komjáthy as members, was instructed to work out a budget as well. A Committee on Hymnal and a Liturgical Committee were formed too (Rev. Stephen Szőke, Rev. Dezső Ábrahám and Rev. Aladár Komjáthy) to investigate the possibilities to recommend the use of another English Hymnal; also to make recommendations concerning the uniformity of certain liturgical texts. The cash salary of pastors was fixed at a monthly minimum of $300. Pastors are also entitled to car allowances and a month’s paid vacation. Their salaries should be adjusted according to the rise of cost of living. The Free Magyar Church will name its representatives to take part in the work of the different committees of the National Council of Churches of Christ in the U.S.A. The General Assembly will ask the congregations to support the work of the American Hungarian Federation as well as of the Coordinated Hungarian Relief, Inc. The two most important resolutions of the General Assembly call for a new Constitutional Assembly. Amendment of the present constitution is recommended by the General Assembly in regard to the Church’s
