14 MAGYAR EGYHÁZ BETHLEN TO!ITH FORUM BETHLEN YOUTH CONFERENCE The 18th annual Bethlen Youth Conference was held over the Labor Day Week-end, and the young people of Duquesne, Penna, had the honor of serving as host group. Delegates in attendance were from Trenton, Roebling, Perth Amboy, Carteret, Staten Island, and the Bronx from the East; and McKeesport and Duquesne from the West. We are sorry to report that no other Western delegations were in attendance. The Conference was unofficially opened Friday night with the arrival of several cars from Roebling and Perth Amboy. They were there to welcome the welcoming committee who happened to be out posting directional signs for their benefit at the time! However, they were properly accommodated, and we were happy to have them with us. Another car arrived in the wee hours of the morning and Goldie Horvath drew the duty of taking care of them. The other delegates from the East arrived early Saturday morning feeling fresh and eager to go. This was easily visible because the first thing they asked for was a place to go—to sleep! The remainder of the delegates made the long trek across the Monongahela River from McKeesport and by mid-afternoon all the delegates had arrived. A light lunch was served Saturday afternoon which was followed by several games of pingpong, and a one car caravan went on a sight seeing tour of Pittsburgh and vicinity. The Executive Board had its meeting Saturday afternoon also, and all Board members were present. A delicious supper of fried chicken was served at 6:00 P.M. after which, the delegates heard a few short remarks from Rev. Nagy of McKeesport, Dean of the Western Classis. The dance was held at the Church hall at 8:00 P.M. and it was highlighted by a number of novelty dances; a csárdás contest, which was won by Bela Halas and Dolly Jacobs; a cake walk, won by Flo. Toth and Steve Deak and a “So You Want To Lead A Band” contest, won by Bill (Ben) “Swing and Sway” Orosz. Sunday opened with Church Service at 11:00 A.M., immediately after which a group picture of all the delegates attending the Conference was taken. This picture taking posed a problem for a time but it was quickly alleviated by the use of chairs, on which some people were reluctant to stand! However, the picture was successfully taken and will be mailed out to all those who placed an order for them. A good Hungarian style dinner followed and Greetings and Welcoming were extended to all delegates by the Chief-Elder of the Duquesne Congregation Elmer Shigo. The Conference was officially opened at 2:30 with the singing of the opening Hymn “Faith of Our Fathers”. Willie Jardanhazy rendered the opening prayer and the Scripture was read by Betty Nagy. The Hymn, “O Master Let Me Walk With Thee”, preceeded the welcoming address by President Frank Horvath. The guest speaker, the Rev. Richard H. Bartley, Pastor, First English Lutheran Church, Duquesne, was introduced by Frank Horvath. Rev. Bartely spoke on the Conference theme of “Living Your Faith”, after which a brief question and answer period was held. After the singing of the hymn, “Onward Christian Soldiers”, a short intermission was taken. The Business Meeting was called to order by Pres. Frank Horvath with all members of the Executive Board being present. A motion was passed at the meeting to set up a Committee to work out details for forming a scholarship fund to be given to some worthy member of the Federation who intends to enter into the ministry. This Committee was formed and they will make their first report at the next Executive Board meeting. The Magyar Egyház was discussed to some length with a number of suggestions being given. After the discussion, a motion was unanimously passed to donate $50.00 to the Magyar Egyház. The problem of the young people of our Churches came up for considerable discussion and suggestions were given to get the young people more interested in Church work. The delegates from the various Congregations agreed to work on this problem in order to get the young people more active in their respective Churches and thus increase the active members of the Federation also. The next item on the agenda was the submitting of bids for next year’s Conference. There was much political maneuvering going on over this point with a hoard of delegations trying to get recognition on the floor. The presiding officer “Fats”, however, rapped his gavel and recognized the delegation from Roebling, who came forth in a blaze of glory and thus they had the honor of submitting the bid for next year’s Conference. The Executive Board will act upon their bid. The final order of business was the election of officers. The following persons were unanimously elected — William Orosz, Fords, N. J., President; Francis Helmeczi, Duquesne, Pa., Vice- President; Dolly Jacobs, McKeesport, Pa., Secretary; John Peters, Roebling, N.J., Treasurer;
