MAGYAR EGYHÁZ 11 THE PARABLE OF THE PRODIGAL PARENTS There were certain parents who had two children; and these children said to their parents: “Father and Mother, give us the portion of your time and attention, and your companionship and your counsel which falleth to us.” And they divided unto the children their living in that they paid the children’s bills and sent them to schools and to dancing schools and to college, and tried to believe that they were doing their full duty to their children. And not so many days after the father gathered all his interests and aspirations and ambitions, and took his journey into a far country, into a land of stocks and bonds and securities and other things which do not interest a boy; and there he wasted his precious opportunity of being a chum to his own son. And the mother likewise gathered together all her interests and aspirations and ambitions, and took her journey into the same far country, and there she gave her time and thought chiefly to dress and theatres and parties and other things that helped weaken the home ties; and there she wasted her precious opportunity of being a helpful companion to her own daughter. And when the father and mother had spent the best of their life and gained money and had enjoyed a certain amount of worldly pleasure, but had failed to find satisfaction, there arose a mighty famine in their hearts, and they began to be in want of sympathy and real companionship. And they went and joined themselves to some of the clubs of that country; and the father was elected chairman of the house committee and president of one of the clubs and was finally sent to Congress; while the mother served on numerous committees and had her vanity gratified by getting into various offices. And both of them would fain have satisfied themselves with the husks that other men and women eat, but no one gave them any real heart-friendship. But when they came to themselves they said: “How many men and women of our own acquaintance have boys and girls whom they understand and who understand them, men and women who talk about their children, and associate with their children, and seem perfectly happy in their children’s comradeship, and we perish here with heart hunger. We will arise and go to our son and our daughter and we will say unto them: “Children, we have sinned against heaven and in your sight; and are no more worthy to be called your parents; make us as some of your acquaintances.” And they arose and came to their children. But when they were yet far off, their children saw them and were moved with astonishment, and instead of running and falling on their necks, they drew back and were ill at ease. And their parents said unto them; “Children, we have sinned against heaven and in your sight; we are no more worthy to be called your parents. Forgive us now, and let us be your friends.” But the children said: “Not so. We wish it were possible, but it is too late. There was a time when we wanted companionship and counsel, but you were too busy. We got the information and we got the companionship; but we got the wrong kind, and now, alas, we are wrecked in soul and body, and there is nothing you can do for us. Now it is too late.” (From the bulletin of St. Mark’s Luth. Ch„ Baltimore, Maryland) 45th ANNIVERSARY OF PEEKSKILL On Sunday, June 5th, 1955 the 45th Anniversary of the Free Magyar Reformed Church of Peekskill, N. Y„ will be celebrated. The once very busy industrial center of the Hudson valley is not far from New York City where Hungarian immigrants settled in great numbers at the turning point of the century. The congregation built a beautiful church and parsonage in 1910 on the hill from where the Bear Mountains and the forests of Mt. Beacon presents a beautiful picture, decorating the front page of this issue. The first pastor to have services there was the Rev. Bertalan Demeter from New York, N. Y., then by the assistance of the Dutch Reformed Church Rev. Alajos Krisik was the first full time pastor in the congregation. Then Rudolph Pompl who was followed by Rev. Louis Hamory who served from 1916 to 1932. Since 1947 the pastor of the Poughkeepsie, N. Y., church Rev. Gabor Csordás, serves them. As small as the Curch is, the people never think about ceasing to work for the glory of God. They do not ask others to help them, by themselves they maintain their independent life. The members are working and building the Church by themselves. There is no end to the modernization of the old things an constantly repairing the buildings, but they do it gladly and with the hope, that God will help them and grant them future. The secret of their success is the generous donations with which the few maintain the Church of God. The spirit and love of the Magyar Reformed Church brought forth many a heroic leaders in this congregation. They showed us a fine example that the faith of our fathers, the Church of our Lord Jesus Christ, which was built with sacrifice, can be and will be maintained with loyal devotion and faithful steadfastedness. We greet the people of the Peekskill Church with Christian love and set their lives, their self giving loyalty and service as an example before our readers. May God bless the Peekskill Church abundantly.
