Recent Concordat Between the Vatican and Spain What is a concordat? Specifically it is a pact by which the State grants privileges to the Catholic Church and recognizes its standing and rights within a State. Tne Church pledges its support of the government Such agreements are necessary at times to avoid misunderstanding, or friction, between civil, political and religious matters. Frequently controversy has been manifested between the Church and Catholic States concerning the mutual limits of their respective jurisdictions. When this occurs, an undertanding is established on special matters (Leo XIII). More than 50 concordants have been drawn up since the year 1107, the majority of them in the nineteenth century. Rome Takes Over Spain On August 27, 1953, the Roman Catholic Church and Spain signed a concordat which declares that Roman Catholicism is the sole religion in Spain. It guarantees religious teaching in Spanish schools. Above all else the concordat allows liberty of worship, even to Protestants and the followers of other religions. The Converted Catholic Magazine Roman Catholicism and Diplomacy Many years ago the School of Foreign Affairs was formed at Georgetown University in Washington, D. C. The purpose of this school was to train Roman Catholics our Department of State is honeycombed with Roman Catholics who are graduates of Georgetown. What does it mean to us: Simply that our diplomacy is slanted along Roman Catholic lines. This is shown by our recent moves to give heavy financial aid to the fascistic, anti-Protestant Franco government of Spain. The latter has since signed a concordat with the Pope banning all public Protestant church services. It certainly seems as though the Catholic Church has firm control of the diplomacy of our supposedly Protestant country. Isn’t it time the American Protestants took steps to protect their fellow Protestants abroad from such persecution? Norman A. Davis--------•-------United Lutherans Issue Warning The synod of New York has asked the United Lutheran Church of America to warn all parishes against the growing tendency to have church suppers, bazaars, card games, dances and other “dubious commercial methods to finance their church programs.” “Commercialism” it said, “is eating like a cancer into the vital organs of the church, causing spiritual paralysis and nullifying the very purpose of the church’s existence. It is evasion of giving. Carrying on God’s work by schemes and rackets is irrelevant and disgraceful. A congregation can prosper spiritually only when the conduct of its financial affairs is in conformity with the express will of God. CARTERET, N. Pénteki iskolánk s azzal együtt a konfirmándusok tanítása október 12.-én kezdődik. Augusztus folyamán a lelkipásztor vakáción volt. Ez alatt a szolgálatokat három alkalommal Ferenczy Pál, egy alkalommal Daróczy Károly lelkipásztorok végezték. Évi vacsoránkat október 31.-én, vasárnap este fél 7 órai kezdettel tartjuk meg a Bethlen Hallban. Erre a megszakítás nélkül immár tizenkilencedikszer tartandó gyülekezeti banketünkre itt is felhívjuk az érdeklődők figyelmét. Esketések. Junius 26.-án kötöttek házasságot templomunkban Walter Kovács (református, Carteret, N.J.) gyógyszerész és Alice L. Mathiasen (róm. kath., Boston, Mass.). Tanúik Helen J. Mathiasen és Emil Kovács voltak. Augusztus 10.-én esküdtek hűséget egymásnak Forrest Poling (róm. kath., Red Bank, N.J.) és Margaret Tóth (református, Caretta, W. Va.). Tanúik: Dályai Zoltán és neje. A megegyezés mindkét házasságnál javunkra köttetett Az uj házasokra Isten gazdag áldását kérjük! Temetések. Augusztus 7.-én kisértük e földön utolsó útjára néhai ifj. Kuhn Andrást (református, Nagykároly, Szatmár m.), aki augusztus 4.én 44 éves korában súlyos műtét után hunyt el. Szülei, özvegye, egyetlen leánya és kiterjedt rokonsága gyászolják. Augusztus 9.-én nagy részvét megnyilvánulás mellett temettük néhai Lázár Andrást, (református, Mándok, Szabolcs m.), aki 65 éves korában augusztus 6.-án hirtelen hunyt el.
