SUMMARY Higher education and science policy of the Hungarian Communist Party (1945-1946) Reform of higher education, renewal of the formation of teachers figured on the agenda of the coalition parties. The communist party underlined the importance of professional values but in the reality tried to increase its own influence with changing the objectives of the formation of teachers, with admitting students without middle school graduation to the technical universities. Considering the party's political interests to obtain the favours of the intelligentsia was of utmost importance. This aspiration influenced the party's opinion concerning the political screening process. During the first year of the democratical changes the Communist Party never stopped emphasizing the importance of professional, objective values in the changes of leaders of universities, in the redundancy dismissals, in the appointment of new professors.
