102 Academies of sciences as advisers In October 1988 the presidents of the science academies of twelve countries sought to answer four questions in Vienna. These were as follows: How can an academy fulfil its role as an adviser? What questions has to be answered? Under what conditions would it undertake the task of giving advice? What plans has it for the future? These questions examined, first of all, the role of a government adviser, i.e. they were interested in the fact what roles scientists and their bodies played in government policy. In the paper concrete examples can be found in what fields and how the advice and opinions of the individual academies were submitted to the government.
