491 SPECIAL FEATURES OF THE DUTCH SCIENTIFIC LIFE Concerted action is the guiding principle of Dutch science policy. This system lays stress upon intersectoria 1 coordination: every branch is responsible for its own R+D funds, but the sectorial goals should be harmonized by the minister who is responsible for the national coordination of science policy. The country's R+D expenditure is considerable. The industry's share in R+D support and that of the government are 50 per cent, respectively. The industry's contribution is made up of the funds of the Dutch and multinational companies. In the Netherlands beside the decisive presence of the five multinational companies the number of small and medium size firms is significant. The bulk of academic research support originates from direct government support, the second source is also of state origin but it comes from independent research organizations; the third source of finance is the group of private foundations. The country is in the forefront of world science in several disciplines, e.g. in physics, biomedicine and chemistry.
