scientific research, and the country's participation in the international division of scientific labour. THE EFFECTIVENESS OF SCIENTIFIC DOCUMENTATION A recurring topic of papers dealing with science organization and the necessary documentation is the problem arising from the flood of information. Having collected the releVant data, the Rumanian author of the paper interprents and analyses them divided into clear-cut groups. He also throws light on the closer and closer relationship between research and documentation , and raises a problem which, in its novelty, is of growing importance; when does documentation reach an economically favourable effectiveness, and how can its effectiveness be measured? Finally the author outlines the state of documentation in Rumania. PRODUCTIVITY OF SCIENTISTS Investigations into the productivity of scientists as a function of their age are highly sophisticated in the United States. The Bulletin of Science Organization reports on one of these surveys which has come to the conclusion that scientists usually keep publishing their achievements after five years of work as much as before, and that their productivity often increases after this period. This tendency can be observed in each group of age up to 60 years of age. There is an obvious decrease in their work only if they are doing administrative or educational work instead of research, or if they shift from higher education to industry. 900
