tution". J.J.Salamon takes this for a motto when he investigates, whether in the contemporary situation it is possible to work out an effective international policy for science. He arrives at the conclusion, that it is still premature to speak of such a policy. Even for that purpose there is need to create new forms of scientific cooperation, for which there already exist the political preconditions, namely, that the state organization of science in individual countries should accomodate itself to the relevant international scientific organ. RESEARCH ORGANIZATION IN DENMARK t Concurrently with the transformation of Denmark in the last few decades from an agricultural country into an essentially industrial one, the scientific and technological research of the country has also grown significantly. According to a survey conducted in 1962, the results of which were only recently published, in Denmark 0,5 % of the national income is being assigned to support scientific research /the outlay assigned for military research excluded/. During this upswing the great industrial enterprises especially created independent research and technological services, while the lesser enterprises directed their efforts primarily to electronics and precision instruments. Thirty years ago the Danish Academy of Science and Technology was founded with the aim of developing a wide variety of research programs for the Danish industry. The Academy conducts its activity with the aid of specialized institutes and special study commissions. Close ties exist between the Academy and the Society of Young Scientists, which supports young scholars. In 1955 the Danish Committee of Nuclear Energy established the Nuclear Energy Station. Simultaneously, Denmark actively participates in other European initiatives in the sphere of nuclear and cosmic research. To this all-round picture of the state of Danish research must be added research conducted in the two universities of the country. Reflecting the growing needs of Danish industry the Danish Scientific and Industrial Research Council was established in I960. 398
