The system of Hungarian research statistics and data on research work in Hungary in I963 It is for the first time that the Bulletin of Science Organization carries a comprehensive statistical material on and evaluation of the whole field of research work in Hungary. In the first part of his review, the author outlines the problems of collecting data on research activités, the basic principles of the national research statistics and the research work going on within institutional framework. He also explains what the term "research units" means, and defines the scope of research statistics. Then the author describes the process of arranging statistical data on research and the registration of research hy subject group units. By making use of a large statistical material, the second part contains basic figures for the national research statistics in I963, thus, for example, the numerical distribution of research units,the number of workers engaged in research units ,expenditures on research in Hungary, scientific work carried on in research units. The author, finally, appreciates the irpportance of research units outside the network of research institutes and university departments. The present article reviews the enacting clauses of the act and also summarizes the decree concerning the training of scientific personnel. The article deals with the different stages of this work, with the often differing viewpoints of the individual countries, as well as with the planning methods and the related problems. Besides reviewing, the author gives a critical evaluation of the problems. 793
