His father was the chief military judge ( kazasker ) Abdülaziz Efendi, his grandfather the Şeyhülislâm and historian H OCA SADEDDIN EFENDI. As son of an educated family, he received a good education and became müderris at a young age. His professional life was quite eventful: he was cadi of Aleppo, Damascus, Edirne and Istanbul, and was not intimidated by his frequent dismissal from these posts. His duty as chief military judge (kazasker) of Anatolia and later of Rumelia was followed by the post of şeyhülislâm during the first years of the reign of Mehmed IV (1648-1687). He was well-known not only for these high positions, but also for his poetry. Contemporary poets such as NAILÎ and N AB Î wrote nazire s of his gazels. Apart from the Divan, other works by B AHAÎ are not to be found in the libraries. Literature: EI 1.915; OM 2.101; PhTF (1964).444; TDEA 1.288; TDVİA 4.463; • E.
