V EHBÎ is known as S ÜNBÜL-ZADE in Turkish literature. He was born in Maraş, his original name being Mehmed. Coming to Istanbul, his success with poems brought him the rank of cadi. He held this post in the regions of Jassy (Iaşi) and Bucharest for seventeen years. Later on, he was sent by Sultan Abdülhamid I (1774-1789) as ambassador to Iran. Due to disagreements with the vali of Baghdad, Ömer Paşa, V EHB Î 'S execution was issued by a ferman. He returned to Istanbul secretly; presenting a kaside entitled Tannane to the Sultan, he gained amnesty and returned to the profession of cadi. During the days of Sultan Selim III (1789-1807) he lived comfortably on the financial aid of the Sultan. Other works by the same author: 1. Divan , 2. Liitfiye-i Vehbî, 3. Tuhfe-i Vehbî, 4. Nuhbe-i Vehbî, 5. Şevk-engîz, 6. Münşeat. The risale, which is entitled Şevk-engiz in the last beyit, is composed in the form of a debate between an admirer of women (zen-perest ) and an admirer of catamite (mahbub-perest ) about the beauty of women and men. This manuscript was copied in 1208/1793 (20a) by Şevket Yahya-yı Enderunî (20a). In the margins of the manuscript three risale s by MIRFAZıL (ENDERUNLU), entitled Huban-name (lb-8b), Zenan-name (8b-17b) and Rakkas-name (17b-19b), are to be found.
