R ÍYAZÍ MEHMED E FENDÍ <see N o s 390 and 772> was bom in Mecca, as son of BİRGİVÎ MUSTAFA EFENDI <see N° 54>, a scholar in the days of Sultan Murad III (1574-1595). He received a good education and taught at numerous medrese s: at the Ahmed Paşa, Mihrimah and Valide Sultan, and was cadi in Yenişehir, Aleppo, Damascus, Jerusalem and Cairo. The last years of his life, he spent in retirement. Though he was a good poet as well, he became known for his biographical work Riyazü'ş-şu'ara (1609). This work was presented to Sultan Ahmed I (1603-1617). Other works by the same author: 1. Divan, 2. Düsturu'l-amel (about the Persian language), 3. Siyer, 4. İhtisar-ı İbn Hallikan. Saki-name, with 1,052 beyit? the most voluminous work of its genre in Turkish literature, is a complaint about the ban imposed on alcoholic beverages at the time.
