The numbering of these new collections starts at Stein Photo 34/1, in continuation of the earlier catalogue. As with the first volume, reference numbers (either Stein's own negative number and/or additional numbering found on the prints) have been placed in square brackets at the end of each entry. These often supply valuable information, since in the majority of cases they can be used to trace entries in Stein's negative notebooks (for which, see Stein Photo 45/1 in this catalogue), which supply dates, captions and other technical information on individual photographs. Where duplicate copies of photographs in other parts of the collection have been identified, these are also listed within the square brackets. Dubious identifications or illegible captions have been noted by the use of the editorial interpolation of a question mark within square brackets. 62
