VEKERDI LÁSZLÓ: A Bolyai-gyűjtemény a Bolyai-kutatásban
A Bolyai-gyűjtemény a Bolyai-kutatásban 107 VEKERDI, LÁSZLÓ The Role of the Bolyai Collection in Research The majority of Bolyai manuscripts — those of father and son alike — can be found in the Teleki—Bolyai Library in Tirgu Mure§ (Marosvásárhely), but the Department of Manuscripts preserves a number of precious Bolyai documents as well. Somé of them accrued to the Library through Farkas Bolyai's contacts with the Academy; others were purchased or donated. Approximately one-third of the collection was assembled by Péter Szabó. He added manuscripts — found in the Kriegsarchiv (War Archives) in Vienna — and documents on Bolyai's military service to the letters he inherited from his father. Szabó's studies — based on these documents — still inspire and influence research on the Bolyais. The Szabó bequest contains important letters from the time when research into the life and work of the Bolyais was just starting (letters from Ferenc Schmidt, Jules Hoüel, Giuseppe Battaglini, and Paul Stáckel to Sámuel and Péter Szabó). For the biography of father and son, Farkas Bolyai's letters addressed to his friend Pál Bodor are alsó particularly significant. Like Szabó's bequest they were obtained by the Library through donation.
