Fekete Gézáné: A Magyar Tudományos Akadémia jutalomdíjai. 2. 1859–1900 (A MTAK közleményei 36. Budapest, 2000)
Summary
summary fekete, magdolna: the rewards of the hungárián academy of sciences 1859-1900 Since its foundation up to 1867 the Academy was financed from public subscription. After this date besides state subsidy various foundations, among others those of reward meant a new financial source for the institution. From the sixties onwards the social circle of endowers has considerably enlarged. In addition to the representatives of Hungárián intellectual life bankers, industrial magnates, landowners, wholesale merchants as well as various institutions like banks, savings-banks, insurance companies, trading companies started to set foundations of reward. The objectives and themes of these foundations have been expanded accordingly. Beyond those fields accepted from the very beginning - like literature, linguistics, history - national economy, commerce, statistics, public fináncé, jurisprudence, and natural science have become of greater importance. The system of foundations of reward, the themes of competitions and the aspects of their judgement reflect the scientific orientation of the Academy of the age as well as the financial possibilities of the public body. The ratio of successful and unsuccessful postings give an insight into the state of the art in the field of science concerned. Though at different level of efficiency the system of competitions posted by foundations has definitely promoted the scientific research work and has become integrated into Hungárián scholarship. This book is about the rewards announced between 1859 and 1900 (and a sequel to the book entitled „The rewards of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences announced between 1831 and 1858" published from the same authorin 1988). The compilation - made on the basis of printed and archival materials - is primarily of factfinding character.
