DEDICATION The articles in this collection deal with a single subject: the 3rd November 1988 inauguration of the Library of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences, or, to be more precise, with events leading up to it, the development of the institution and its functions. The volume reproduces, without alteration, the articles published in three journals (Magyar Tudomány, 1989.No.2. 115—141.p., Tudományos és Műszaki Tájékoztatás, 1989.No.4. 147-167.p., Könyvtáros, 1989.No.3. 133—139.p.). As a consequence, the reader will necessarily find a certain amount of overlap within descriptions or data, somé may even be contradictory. Nevertheless, we believe, that it is this difference in approach to our subject by the articles of the three journals which guarantees the unity of the volume. Therefore we saw no justification in the reconcilement or editing of certain details. The articles of the three journals are rendered more perceptible by illustrations and are supplemented, for the promotion of research in library history, by an Academy Library bibliography containing half a thousand items.
