151 SUMMARY PROBLEMS AND PERSPECTIVES OF SOCIAL SCIENCES INFORMATION AND DOCUMENTATION NETWORK IN HUNGARY This paper was originally published in: Problems and perspectives of networking in social information and documentation in Hungary. FID studies in social science information and documentation. Networks and networking in social science information. FID. Publ. 606. 1984. 77-86.p. The networking of social science information and documentation has a history of at least two decades, but organization endeavours in this direction can be traced already to the beginning of the fifties. The network principle is one of the firm bases in the development of libraries and information in Hungary. But there have always been indications too.opposed to the advantages of networking. One of the reasons for opposition is the jealousy for independence, and another the absence of reál interest. Networking represents everywhere somé form of co-ordination and cooperation, which includes alsó a division of work and its regulation. Mostly the person or institute which co-ordinates is in favour of co-ordination, while the others, who are being co-ordinated, are less enthusiastic about interference with their work. Since the second half of the 1970's the Science Policy Committee of the Government, the Hungárián Academy of Sciences, and the Ministry of Culture has established the Social Science Information Working Group as a working organ. Its organization and financial management has been entrusted to the Library of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences. In this Working Group, activity has been based on real interest, on the basis of ajoint developmental plan relying on computerization. Out of the sum made available for development, in several branches or institutions, it was possible to start computerized services (e.g. sociology in the Municipal „Ervin Szabó" Library of Budapest), or where such already existed, to extend services (e.g. Parliamentary Library). It has been proven that as soon as institutional and disciplinary interests became tangible, interests in networking cooperation increased. Instead of declarations and exhortation the institutions obtained financial and related professional support.
