136 SUMMARY THE ROLE OF THE LIBRARY OF THE HUNGÁRIÁN ACADEMY OF SCIENCES IN THE DEVELOPMENT OF SOCIAL SCIENCES INFORMATION IN HUNGARY This paper was prepared for a collective Russian-language volume to be published on the occasion of the tenth anniversary of MISON (Russian acronyme: International Social Sciences Information System of Academy Libraries of the Socialist Countries). Its chapters are: 1. Nature of the Library of the Hungárián Academy of Sciences 2. The Library as a provider of information 3. The Library as the organizer of social sciences information 4. The Library as the organizer of international relations. The paper analyses the process in the course of which the Library introduced new information cultures within the framework of its information services in Hungary. These include the science policy and research management documentation service started at the beginning of the sixties, as well as the scientometric researches and surveys started at the beginning of the eighties, one of the products of which is the „Library Informatics and Scientometric serial" (whose volumes 1—4 have so far been published). A particular place in Hungárián library and information special literature is covered by such series of the Library as „Catalogues of the Manuscript Department", which provide reviews of important legacies, or the catalogue series of doctoral and postdoctoral theses deposited in the Department of Manuscripts as copyright copies and alsó published under their editorship. A survey is available of the Library as the organizer of the Social Sciences Information Working Group (for details see, in the Appendix of this volume, the paper entitled „Problems and perspectives of social sciences information and documentation network in Hungary)". One contribution of the activity of this Working Group was an interesting experience whereby computerized information technology was seen to have played a role as an organization force too, and it was alsó proven in connection with this Working Group that successful co-ordination is only possible if it was based on active interest. Since the beginning of the sixties the Library has taken an increasingly active part in the development of international professional relations, whose predecessor would have been the international exchange of publications in which the Library has been engaged for approximately 150 years. In the past 25 years the Library has built up contacts partly as an organizer and partly as a direct supplier of data with the International Social Sciences Documentation Committee, the FID/C3 (the committee implementing the revision of the Social Sciences branch of UDC), with FID/SD (Social Development), with MISON, with ECSSID (European Co-operation in Social Science Information and Documentation).
