The library-network of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences
52 of this was shown by the introduction of measures which we have already referred to. In line with the methodological work an advisory activity is alsó carried out by the methodological adviser who regularly visits the resarch libraries. In the course of his visits, the adviser instantly makes his remarks to the librarian on what he has experienced or observed. Moreover he alsó prepares a report on his visit, in which he records his findings, as well as the state and situation of the library as at the time of the visit. This report may alsó be utilized to collect data on the library network as a whole. Reports of this kind proved to be very effective and as a rule may serve several purposes. In the first place they are of informative character. Research libraries are working under the direct control of the director of the institute; thus it is desirable that the director should always be informed about the opinion and viewpoint of the Central Library. In somé cases these reports only contain informations about the situation of the library at issue as compared with other libraries of the network, or about the exceptionally good performance of one or the other library. There are cases however, when the reports alsó touch upon problems which are beyond the librarian's competence. Such problems are, among others, those of premises, equipments and installation. Directors are often inclined to refer to the Central Library's expert opinion when applying for the expansion of the premises. Again the report may point to somé shortcomings whose elimination needs the director's help. (E. g. to make the research workers keep the rules of lending out books.) During the past few years fruitful relations have been established between the research librarians, the Central Library and the directors of the institutes. As a result not only librarians apply to the adviser for assistance, but the directors alsó consult the director of the Central Library in case of problems affecting their respective research library. Laying down the foundation of a unified library system, the methodological work now focusses its interest on works relating to scientific information in research libraries. This cannot be solved by means of unified organization forms. This work proceeds very slowly. By the help of the proper Sections of the Academy, the Central Library wich is alsó responsible for the documentation carried on in research institutes, has started organizing this field of activity too. Difficulties arising from the debates and controversies about a unified system of scientific information would require a classification of unified terminology. Thus in addition to raising the generál standards of library and information work, the main program is the organization of the biological information service within the library network of the Academy.
