PREFACE This booklet, the latest issue of "Vocabularium abbreviaturarum bibliothecarii" , contains more than 15,000 entries, including the abbreviations of social ,political , and sociological institutions, political parties, inter-state institutions and offices. Due to technical difficulties only the most important institutions concerned with transportation are included. This topic, together with organs of communication, will be fully covered in a separate issue now under preparation. This work is the result of several years of collecting and processing data. Primarily the numerous Hungarian and international collections of abbreviations and the central periodical catalogue were employed in the compilation, but use was made of various special catalogues and even monographs. With the needs of libraries and reference work in mind, the abbreviations of thirty languages were taken into consideration in an attempt to be as complete as possible. Not only existing abbreviations ,but even past ones are included, although these latter are not complete. The following method of processing has been used: the abbreviations are followed by the full name, then - whenever it is known - the centre of the institution or possible the country and finally the letters standing for the original language of the abbreviation. Only one or two letters are used for the most frequently occuring centres. When giving the full name after abbreviations in Latin letters, the international practice for compilations of abbreviations were used and, with the exception of particles, every word is capitalized. If an institution has more than one sigla, the full description is given only once and an equality sign is used to refer to the basic form. If the same institution has official abbreviations in several languages, the main form is referred to whenever giving the variation and the full names are given after the abbreviations in the different languages. Whenever the name of an institution is known in different forms, but with the same letters /e.g., allcapitalized , or only part are capitalized/, the different forms are not listed.
